Greenpeace....
They're on the Calgary Tower right now. Fire trucks and police all down 9th avenue, the area has been taped off now. Apparently, they went up the elevator and then took a ladder and went out the escape hatch. They're bilaying down it looks like.
Hopefully the wind picks up...

the best thing to do is to simply ignore them.
Same principle as TV not showing streakers, and announcers not mentioning them. Ignore them, and the tactics become pointless.

Apparently they are hanging a banner that reads "Separate oil and state" or something similar.
Anyone close by have a view? Worth walking a few block to check out?

Of those that have responded thus far in this thread, how many actually believe that global warming is happening and is caused by mankind?

Who cares.
How many people think illegally grandstanding and putting up a banner on a building and taking emergency workers away from real emergencies at a cost to all of us that pay taxes is a really crappy way to drum up support for your cause?
It's like those abortion protestors shoving fetus posters in my face every day. I leaned to their side a bit before, but now I wish I could get pregnant so I could go get an abortion on the sidewalk right in front of them out of spite.

Yup. the medium is the message. The methods Greenpeace use totally take away all effect from the message they try to promote.

send them the bill for all the emergency crews who are down there instead of responding to actual emergencies. The Calgary Tower should also send them the bill for all the business they have lost this morning due to these clowns. And throw them in jail just for being a general nuisance.

Yep, which unfortunately is pretty crappy, since the underlying idea is one we should all be supportive of.

Oh dear. This board goes in circles. We had this debate a month or so ago. Are you saying that civil disobedience is wrong in all forms? There were many police at Martin Luther King Jr ralley. Was Martin Luther King an asshat for having the ralleys? The poor taxpayers had to pay for those police who could have been off doing REAL work.

I agree - I'm all for free expression (and to some extent sympathize with the larger objectives of Greenpeace, even though I think they're out to lunch on a lot of the specifics), but stunts like this end up costing taxpayer money. I would like to see them charged for the costs associated with their stunts, including the costs of emergency response crews, security, removal of the banner, and any disruptions to other people's jobs.
