Some info on the new jailbreak, be careful with it seems to cause problems with Facetime and MMS, and if you don't have a restore before you jailbroke it could be a problem.

Its always a wise idea to do a backup of your phone before attempting *any*type of jailbreak.

^What is the best way of doing said backup?

I have SSH blobs stored according to Cydia but I'm just wondering how I would restore back to 3.1.3 if I were to completely screw up and need a restore.

iTunes will periodically perform an automatic backup when you sync your device. To do it manually, plug your device in. On the left panel on iTunes right click on your device name and choose backup. I'm not sure about restoring to previous versions of the OS. Is 3.1.3 the newest version that is available for your device?

So should I update to 4.01 before going to jailbreakme.com? I'm currently still in 3.2.1. Does the jailbreak load up the new firmware or do I need that first?

edit: Nevermind, looks like I can update to 4.01 and be ok.

I don't know about this one... My Cydia keeps crashing when I browse for apps, and Terminal won't stay open. Without Terminal to change my root pwd, I'm just going to restore and give it a week or so for the staple apps to be updated.

Tried on my iPad and seems to work for me, though in Cydia itself I just get 504 timeouts, but I was able to install some things.

First time doing this, I guess changing root password is a good idea?

Yeah. The default root pwd is the same on every device. Not that big of a deal with app store apps, but much worse with the jailbroken stuff.

So I did a restore from backup, and it still appears jailbroken.. do I need to do a full Restore to unjailbreak?

Though after doing the restore from backup Cydia seems to be working great, no timeouts.

So I installed 4.0.1 and jailbroke it... it runs so slowly for the 3G. It was not worth upgrading for the stupid visuals and icon folders.

Ya I'm not sure about this either. My phone was crash-happy last night after jailbreaking it. My primary usage of the jailbreak was to get wywi so I could share my data plan between my phone and iPad. I complained to rogers and pretty much got that for free, so now I'm thinking of just doing a restore and getting some stability back.

If your crashing, do a full restore, then rejailbreak. Upgrade all essentiall upgrades in Cydia. mine is as stable as ever!

OK, so I finally got the root password thing figured out...

In Cydia, search for MobileTerminal but make sure you get the one that says iOS 4 in the description or title. It should be version 426. Do not download the older one (version 364.1-10) as it will just crash whenever you open it.

The actual password stuff is pretty standard. Do the following commands:

su root
passwd
passwd mobile

When it asks you for a password after the su root command, use alpine. This is the default root password that you want to change. When it asks you for a password after the passwd command, this is the new password you are changing to. Use whatever you want, but try to make it difficult to hammer. The passwd mobile command is the same as what you just did except it changes the password for the mobile account on the phone, instead of the root account.

This is probably the single most important thing to do after jailbreaking. Cydia (or Rock) does not filter out all the malicious apps for you like the App Store does.

Edit: You may have to add a new repository in order to get the new MobileTerminal to show up. I don't think it's been released to the default repos yet.

And now for my jailbreaking tip of the day...

Download SpringFlash. It comes with Activator, which enables gestures on the phone. That's not the cool thing, though. The cool thing is that SpringFlash turns on the camera flash with a simple gesture. This thing is bright. Waaaayyyy brighter than the old white-screen flashlight apps.

I have mine setup so whenever I double tap on the statusbar at the top of the screen, my flash turns on. Double tap again, and it turns off. Finally, an actual flashlight phone!

Thanks FanIn80 for the info in the newer terminal.
The repository I got it from was http://cydia.xsellize.com

I uninstalled the original Terminal program through Cydia and installed the iOS4 version however it did not show up on my iPhone. Reinstalling the program did the trick though. It worked properly the first try on the iPod Touch however.
Just to add to your instructions after you enter the passwd or passwd mobile commands you will have to enter your new password twice before you can move on to the next command. Also it will not show your characters so just watch the virtual keyboard to make sure you are actually entering the password you want to.

I have jailbroken both my 3GS and iPod touch. 3GS was iOS 4.0.1 and the touch was iOS 4.0.

Took about 5 minutes to load and the device didn't even have to reboot.
Tried this as I like how easy it sounds but I just keep getting a "Opps Time out" error msg on my phone when trying to apply the jailbreak on this site.

Any ideas?

Trying to jailbreak my 3GS running 4.0.1

Is there another easy way to do this anyone can recommend?
