Well, according to this news report, they don't.

I don't know about that, the trips that I took behind the woodshed when I misbehaved would probably be construed as child abuse and my dad would have been locked up for years.
We used to get the belt, or the paddle or when we were really young the ruler or the wooden spoon.
Yet I seem to be able to refrain from murder and torture and rape.
Punishment is all in the context of it. There are horrific parents out there, but sometimes a good paddlin is needed. There isn't enough of that happening nowadays.

While I am not a lawyer and thus not 100% up to date with the criminal code of Canada is respect to animal rights, but you need to do some fact checking if you really believe this.
If you live in recall a few years back, there were some individuals who thought it would be a good idea to duck-tape a dogs legs together so it couldn’t fight, then attach a rope from the animals feet to the back of their truck. The two proceeded to drive around the town of Didsbury until this dog was dead.
Now, to answer your question, the kids got house arrest and probation. For killing a dog. That’s sick in my opinion. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/calgary/sto...dog-abuse.html
I suspect you don’t, or never did, have pets. I grew up with dogs and if something like this happened to them I’d be close to snapping and doing the same to the little puke kids.
I'm not saying the Canadian justice to humans is much better, a kid when I was in high school decided to murder another one while physically in the school when he was 16 (knew damn well what he was doing)…He got 4 years.

Wow ... going to have to go ahead and disagree with you here. Wasn't it last year when a guy received a sentence of community service for throwing a live kitten on a BBQ? I'm not sure you could do that to a kid and get a slap on the wrist.
Nextly, why are many of you making assumptions about the parenting style this kid is receiving? Some are saying that clearly being lenient on him isn't working ... who's to say this kid is getting leniently punished at home? For all we know this messed up behaviour could be a result of punishment that has gone over the line.

The parents are the ones who need to step up and accept some responsibility, why is their 8 year old allowed to wander the neighborhood unsupervised when he already had a reputation for doing terrible things to peoples pets?

Beat your kid and BBQ a cat? Sounds like a typical BBQ in a Chinese household to me...

When I was in junior high there was a kid from my school (two of them, actually...but only one actually did the act) who picked up a stray kitten behind his house and thought it would be remarkably amusing to throw it against a wall.
That innocent, defenseless animal was never given the right to life...and that POS got away with it. He was in our military system for quite a few years.
And I remember that incident in Didsbury. I also remember signing every single petition I came across in Red Deer to have animal abuse laws revised. I wonder what ever came from those petitions....

My father once picked ME up and threw me against a wall, knocking me dizzy. I too seem to refrain from murder, torture and rape. But I'm not exactly sure how it made me a better person. Other than it made me hate him and I haven't spoken more than 2 words to him over the last 18 years.... and I think I'm a better person for it.

Cruelty to animals is all but ignored in this country. The bill that based a couple years ago was complete garbage, so cruelty to animals is sure to continue.

I view people who hurt animals as equal to child molesters. The absolute scum of society. When someone goes on a killing spree i can atleast understand why they might want to do that. But to torture and kill a completely innocent animal makes no sense whatsoever.

I think the best thing for the kid other than obviously a psychiatric evalutation would be community service at the local SPCA/Animal Shelter with a police officer. It appears he doesn't understand that animals have emotions or that there are concequences to doing these things.

It doesn't matter what an 8 year old kid does, he will virtually never get jail time in Canada. Expecting anything else is showing a serious lack of knowledge of the Canadian Justice System.
What the kid needs is counselling and a good environment to grow up in. Chances are his parents are not shining examples of sanity and good parenting.

The kid is likely being abused physically or sexually by some one. Usually when kids start killing animals it is a sympton of something else going on.

And this most likely wasn't the best thread to call him out, given the gravity of the subject matter and all.

I guess first impressions do a lot.
You are right though, wrong thread.

This to me is ridiculous. How you can equate animal cruelty to child molestation is absurd. You're position makes no sense whatsoever.

Because they're both basically innocent. Obviously, molesting a child is going to cause more pain to more people but i have a soft spot for animals. If i was Tsar, they both get their heads cut off.
