I guess now that you've clarified the bear, I understand what arrows you're talking about now.

There have been a number of incidents in the North recently involving the Russians ever since this "gold rush" of sorts to claim all of the valuable resources. There have always been subs poking around up there but according to my professor the activity has increased dramatically in the last few years. He is part of an annual excursion up north as part of a Canadian Scientist team that is doing an EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) on the development of natural resources in the area, related to the continued melting of sea ice.

I thought we had a thread on this a little while ago.. CBC Just ran a great in depth special about the issues in the Circumpolar North.

Some articles on the subject:

http://www.thearctic.is/articles/top...nska/index.htm

Good general overview of the issues.

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/north/story...c-council.html

Older article that talks about how this interest has been growing globally.

Here is a breif video about the issues from CBC. Talking about the Russian bombers that will be patrolling the arctic.. Video talks about this system we now are implementing. Basically a look at the issues while they were developing.

Always interesting to take a look back now and see how it was talked about. How a 3 minute skit turned into an hour long special.

LOL. Nice rhetoric.

Is the situation (you describe) in Russia really any different than the problems the rest of the world is dealing with?

Lots of good info in this old thread - so I thought I'd use it instead of starting a new one.

2 CF-18s intercepted two Russian TU-95 bombers 463 km east of Goose Bay, N.L. on Wednesday.

If you're trying to say every country in the world faces identical issues I'm not sure anybody would agree with you. Russia has its own unique problems due to government, industry, structure, history, geography, resources, etc just like most countries have unique issues

Strange impulse to try and oversimplify or overgeneralize about things.

You guys are on your own if they attack. Our government wont do a damn thing unless we are attacked.

Russia isn't the most liked country in the world. I think they will have a sh*t storm on their hands if they attacked a country like Canada.

No surprise, the Russians are continually testing their readiness and capabilities, and our readiness and capabilities.

We still aren't seeing their varsity yet, the pampered elite of Russian Aviation aren't usually attached to the Bears.

If they were serious we would be seeing Backfires and Blackjacks

Goose: No, he was man. It was a really great move. He was inverted.
Charlie: You were in a 4g inverted dive with a MiG28?
Maverick: Yes, ma'am.
Charlie: At what range?
Maverick: Um, about two meters.
Goose: It was actually about one and a half I think. It was one and a half. I've got a great Polaroid of it, and he's right there, must be one and a half.
Maverick: Was a nice picture.
Goose: Thanks.
Charlie: Eh, lieutenant, what were you doing there?
Goose: Communicating.
Maverick: Communicating. Keeping up foreign relations. You know, giving him the bird!
Goose: [Charlie looks puzzled, so Goose clarifies] You know, the finger
Charlie: Yes, I know the finger, Goose.
Goose: I-I'm sorry, I hate it when it does that, I'm sorry. Excuse me.

Arctic sovereignty is becoming a large issue in the Canadian military and strategic studies circles. I think I can say confidently when it comes to soverginty issues - things are going to get worse before they get better.

We may have the ability to repel Russian aircraft, but we have virtually no ability to repel Russian (or other) ocean vessels or underwater vessels. I think this is a huge concern for Canada. The arctic needs to be patrolled, but you can't do it only from the sky. You need boots on the ground, or in this case, ships.

That was why one of my university papers argued that Canada needed to pursue deep diving nuclear submarines with effective anti-ship capabilities.

When the U.S. started moving forward with their SeaWolf and later Virginia class submaries I thought that Canada would be best served by picking up some of the surplus 688 and 688i submarines.

while the Victoria Class Submarines that we got from Britian for a song are capable submarines (when they don't have electrical fires, or bad pumps) they lack in range and arctic capabilities.

You should know my stance. I would love to put a foot in a ruskies ass but I doubt our government will let us spend more money when we are already fighting two useless wars.

The Russians pull this all the time.

They overfly carrier groups and come close to Alaska probably more than we know.

And, as part of NORAD and NATO, you will help out or we'll just let 'em right on through.
