I can speak English and Croatian, although I am not 100% fluent in Croatian. If I take a minute to construct the sentence in my mind, I can get by pretty good. If I'm listening to the radio or watching Croatian television, sometimes I miss what is being said because it goes too fast. If someone talks slow enough, I can understand most of what is being said. Also, this is only for the Shtokavian dialect. It is the "official" dialect in Croatia (and Bosnia/Serbia I believe), but is really only spoken as the preferred dialect by about 40% of the population in Croatia from what I understand.. although many people will switch to the Shto dialect if you ask. When I went to Istria, I had real trouble communicating because of dialect differences.
Kind of sad actually. Up until I started Kindergarten, I pretty much only spoke Croatian.

Pretty cool stuff, I am hoping to continue this next with Spanish and then move further east from there.

I think that people teaching themselves languages is probably one of the most noble aspects of self-education. Good for you, I wish I had that discipline.

English and can understand some Portuguese. Not a lot, but if I'm around my dad and his friends, I can kinda follow along.
I'm gonna bite the bullet and take lessons in the fall. I really want to learn Portuguese.

I wonder what people mean when they say "ok" or "basic".
I know with the company I work for, we do a lot of international work and we are not allowed to have a 2nd language on our CV unless we can actually conduct business in that language or have the ability to teach it to someone else.
Having a "basic" understanding of a language is not the same as acutally knowing or being able to speak another language.

How do you (or anyone) find the Rosetta Stone program for self-education? I've heard extremes on both sides, but I'm interested in trying to improve my Spanish and German but don't really have the time for a classroom program.
