I would totally agree with that. So many bands popped up in the "Gothenburg" scene after Slaughter of the Soul... Anyone remember the days when Arch Enemy/In Flames were actually heavy bands?

I heard that for At The Gates they considered Slaughter of the Soul to be their pinnacle and that was why they disbanded... in the sense that they couldnt top that album... I cant claim that as fact, just something I heard. Anyone know why they disbanded?

And just because everyone loves epic-ness, the inimitable Emperor.

Grindcore + jazz brilliance = John Zorn's Naked City

Well I have been listening to Immortal and Emperor, and my lord. I will never be same.

They kick ass! Crazy Norwegians!

Edit: Man, Behexen is even more crazy, crazy Satanists!

Here's some of my favourite unique black metal bands:

Israeli Middle Eastern Black / Folk

Black / Thrash - one of my favourite albums this year

Black / Death

As close as you'll get to new Celtic Frost

Irish Black / Folk

Black / Thrash

Melodic Black / Death

Avant-Garde Black (I love the horns on this album)

I believe AC is a fan of the DFD and Polkadot Cadaver... anyway, I came across another project from Mr. Todd Smith who was the lead vox for the previous two bands. It's called El-Creepo and it's really damn good stuff. It's not Metal, but it's got that DFD vibe, although most of it is on the mellower tip. In the same vein as that more mellow stuff on DFD's Adultery release. It was released in late 2009 and I'm kind of embarassed for not having heard of it before this as I'm a big DFD fan.

I haven't been able to stop listening to this for about a week and half now. Best one since Natural Born Chaos. I know I'm biased for this band, and I have loved everything they have ever put out. I guess I'm one of those fans who will like everything they do regardless.

This one is blowing my mind! Picked it up after I read the review on Angry Metal Guy.

Holy effing crap!

ya i've never been much of an Epica fan before, but this album finally got me into them. they've always sounded sort of generic to me before in the realm of symphonic metal, but in this album they've finally seemed to find a style that clicks, probably because it's the most aggressive album they've made

if you like this album and haven't explored a lot of other female fronted metal, i've got a trove of stuff you might like

I really got a hard-on for Nightwish. Their album 'Once' is a masterpiece, and their cover of Gary Moore's "Over The Hills and Far Away" makes me scream for joy. It was one of my favorite songs as a kid and Nightwish absolutely nailed it.

I haven't heard any of the other Epica stuff.

What else have you got?

After Forever (kind of epica-ish, best song: Face your demons)
Beautiful Sin (Lost, amazing metal song)
Elis
Kells (french metal)
Krypteria
Octavia Sperati (Moonlit, Guilty Am I)
Singergy (best song I spit on your grave), guitar players are from Children of Bodom IIRC so it's pretty fast and furious

and if you like Nightwish you might like Within Temptation too.

well first here's a few bands along that same line, symphonic metal with female vocals

Amberian Dawn

Delain

Lunatica

ReVamp

Sirenia

Within Temptation

and now some bands that still have female vocals, but are different genres completely

Aghora

Autumn

Cantata Sangui (no guitars in this one, just dual bass)

Draconian

Octavia Sperati (all female group)

What do you guys recommend to a melodic death metal fan? And I mean newer metal cause I've been out of the loop. I like In Flames, you know bands like Opeth, Katatonia, and to a lesser extent My Dying Bride..... also a huge TOOL fan. I like that slow melodic metal that progresses, if you know what I'm talkin about. Help a brother out!

i have to say though that there is no hotter woman in metal than Christina Scabbia

it's just too bad that everything Lacuna Coil has done past Comalies has been terrible

Nightwish - Over The Hills And Far Away
Originally by Gary Moore

Mentioned already in the thread how this track made me fall in love with Nightwish. The original by Gary Moore was a huge theme of my childhood, and to hear a modern band absolutely nail it like this made me tear up and literally start screaming at the computer in sheer joy.

AND...the original, produced by the BBC! Lol...

I don't particularly like power metal... but the new Blind Guardian is fantastic.
