Freezer Help/Question

So just yesterday my freezer suddenly stopped working. The weird thing is that my connecting fridge is still working. Is this a common problem that is easy to fix? I find it odd that the top freezer doesn't work but the bottom fridge does. If I can't fix it myself, who do I call to get this fixed and how much will it cost?

I'm guessing it's the compressor for the freezer but hard to know for sure. Does the freezer have a light and if so, is it on?

Freezer does not have a light. But there seems to be cool air generating from the back. The freezer is operating like a fridge actually.

Get it checked. Compressor might be kaput.

What kind of freezer is it?

I can't fix the compresser myself? Is this a serious problem? It's a Whirlpool fridge.

I actually recently had the exact same problem. I have a side-by-side fridge/freezer combo. The fridge would cool normally but the freezer wouldn't freeze. The temperature readout said 5-10 degrees (Fahrenheit I imagine) for the freezer and 40 degrees for the fridge. The recommended temperatures were 0 degrees and 37 degrees respectively. The freezer would generate cold air but not enough. The problem, I guess, ended up being the thermostat so what I did to fix it was I removed the metal panel on the inside back of the freezer and defrosted the whole unit. I left it unplugged for a day and a half and plugged it back in. It's been working perfectly since. Maybe try something like that?

I suppose you could try, but everyone I have talked to in regards to fixing a freezer have said that if its a compressor related issue you should get a professional to come in and fix it.

Is the fan working ? I think alot of fridges cool the freezer part and regulate how much cold from the freezer part, is needed to keep the fridge part cold.

In other words, one refrigeration unit, so if one side is cold it's still working, but air flow could be the issue.

You defrosted your fridge, you didn't fix the thermostat.

Frost free fridges defrost regularly on a timer, maybe once a day for 5 minutes or once a week or something, I don't know.

If ice builds up around the (tube and fins) ?? lol that the refrigerant runs thru it stops the air exchange, then fridge no worky.

Yes the fan is still working. I'm taking that means it should be relatively easy for the repairman to fix?

Maybe it's froze up like Meelapo's, try defrosting it ? There's a part called a defrost timer that can screw up the defrost cycle.

Also something can plug the drain hose that lets defrost water to drip out so it plugs up with that water (ice) Normally it drips onto a tray on the bottom of the fridge, it evaporates from there.

I shouldn't know this much about fridges.

this happened to my parents a few years back - they did the same thing - let the entire unit defrost - plugged it back in and it was fine

How much ice was built up in there? My freezer is kindy of finicky when too much ice builds up.

There is minimal ice build up. I'd say virtually none actually

I would have expected this right at the get go. Arn't most fridges (that have freezers) just cooled by letting some of the freezer air into the fridge?
