Bought my wife a kindle for her birthday and she is in love with the thing. Seems to run faster then any of the Sony products I demo'd (god those things run slow, 5-8 seconds for a page refresh?).
Seriously? I have a Sony Reader and I can verify it takes less than a second for a page to refresh. It would be useless if it took 5-8 seconds. You must have tried a damaged one.

Yeah, my Reader definitely takes less than a second to refresh. It's just like flicking a page. 5 to 8 seconds is ridiculous. These things would never sell if that was the case.

It was a store display model at a Best Buy - not sure what the model was. But yeah, it did take 5-8 seconds (no exaggeration) to change a page which turned me off entirely from the device. Plus, I personally didn't like the screen, but that's just my preference - screen choice seems to be a fairly subjective thing.
Not sure if the video does the screen justice or not, I was hoping the screen would look as good as eInk in sunlight and an LCD in other cases, but this video doesn't really show that that well.
This video shows it maybe better. I really want to see what this screen is like in real life.

Wow... That is the type of screen that I want, and it should be so much cheaper!
Anyways, I went into the Sony store yesterday and played around with the readers. The touch is definitely out for me. I didn't care for the screen with the touch layer. It doesn't have the same gesturing sensitivity that I'm used to with my iPhone.
I did like the size and weight of the pocket. That's probably going to be my choice, whenever I see the price drop to something I'm comfortable with.

Apple has put the pressure on e-book readers with its forthcoming iPad tablet. But Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Sony aren’t taking it lying down. Color, touchscreens and improved black-and-white displays are some of the innovations that consumers can expect to see in electronic-reading gadgets this year.
I as well went into the Sony store last weekend and took a look the readers. I wasn't blown away by the pocket or the touch. I thought the screen size for the pocket was small. I think I would prefer something bigger, but it would still be ok. I liked the weight of both of them. Nice and light. Lighter than lots of books actually. The screens on them where ok. Hardly just like paper. More etch-a-sketch than paper, but still readable. I think $240 for the cheapest one is too much money for a stand alone eReader. I sure hope the iPad can deliver as a suitable eReader.
I bought the Sony Touch last weekend (thank you, Dollars For Gold!). At first I felt like I'd over paid and if I'd just had the patience to wait 1/2 a year something cooler, better and cheaper would be on the market.
A week in, I say screw patience! I love my ereader and I'm glad I bought it.

Sony ones are cheaper, you can get the 5" one for $185!
I just picked up one a few days ago, thought I got a good deal for the reader, a leather case and a $25 gift card for books for $230, which is still a good deal but not as good with the reader itself being $185.
Edited the thread title to draw attention to the sale, hope that's ok.

Lol except the reader I got had the gift card already used!!!!
So I have to go back to Best Buy a 2nd time.. first time was to get the $40 back after they dropped the prices by $40, this time to get another $25 off.
I even have the email address, name and phone # of the person that bought it, used the gift card, then returned it! Yay internet sleuthing.
Now I just have to figure out what to do to that person.. thief..
So I end up getting the reader and leather case for $173.

So I settled on a Barnes and Noble 'nook' this week and bought one after several rounds of debating between the Kindle, the Sony, the nook or waiting for the iPad.
It's pretty awesome. The touch screen is great and the book browsing/purchasing is seamless.
Sorry to drag up a semi-old thread but I've been doing some research on eBook Readers as well. It was just announced a few days ago that Kobo Books (majority owned by Chapters/Indigo) is releasing their own eReader in May and for only $149 Canadian.
It doesn't have WiFi, so you've got do download the content and upload it using USB but given the price it seems like a pretty good deal. Plus it comes pre-loaded with 100 books. There are some differences between it and the Kindle, but the price is a major attraction as far as I'm concerned. Anyone still trying to decide which eReader they want might want to check the Kobo out.
Dell.ca has the Sony Reader Pocket Edition (silver only) for $169.99 again! I went into Future Shop, and they price matched it just now! They told me I could have whatever colour I wanted BTW.
I bought the silver one, as the blue one has a purple border and the red one has a pink border. Neither of those look great IMO.
I am giving my reader it's initial charge now. What I am most delighted to discover is the open source Calibre software for downloading news and blog posts! It works like a dream! I don't even know if I should bother with the official Sony software.
Anyone have any other tips for getting the most out of my Sony Reader?
I thought about getting the Kobo, but it seems a little sluggish, and bugs have been reported.
Been looking at the Kobo lately for my wife. The price at $149 is very attractive.
Another attractive feature is that if supports epub as well as pdf.. To me, epub is great because I think most of the books she gets will be downloaded from the library and I'm assuming that if it has epub software she can do this.
Also, one other nice feature is that it has 1gb of memory (1000 books) and you can insert a sd card for additional memory (up to 4gb more I believe)
Another thing is the 6" screen... a noticeable difference in the screen size compared to a 5".
Basically I think I will get the no bells and whistles Kobo. She already has a Blackberry and she can connect to that via bluetooth (an option that the Kobo has) and of course we also have a laptop to download books onto and transfer via usb to the Kobo.
So for a pure ebook reader, the Kobo is looking very attractive.
P.S. Kobo apparently has released a software update in July that fixes a few problems and improves some other features.
