In fact, ginger beef is based on a northern Chinese dish that is much drier and less sweet than the restaurant version. Although his name is lost to history, it is thought that a Chinese chef working in Calgary came up with the crunchy "Americanized" ginger beef with the sweet sauce that is so popular in Alberta. Even today, it is difficult, although not impossible, to find Alberta-style ginger beef outside the province. But whatever its origins, ginger beef is a great way to introduce people to Chinese food. And, while definitely not a dish for calorie-counters, it has the advantage of containing healthy ingredients such as ginger - thought to help cure colds.

Imperial Dynasty is pretty good: http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/15/19075...ynasty-Calgary

Their buffet is always on and relatively fresh. We got a Chinese friend of ours to help us order the authentic stuff from the non-English menu and were pleasantly surprised. You'll find lots of Asian people eating here too, which is a plus.

I dont like it how at Bubblemania they give you the pearls seperately.
I can't pace it! Either put too much pearls into a slushy and they freeze or not enough that I run out of juice first!

I finally figured it out why they do that though. If they put it in all at once they totally freeze and taste like crap!

So did you drive your civic there?

not bad at all, they didnt have egg rolls though which perturbed me. I like a greasy egg roll and not the giant doughy kind, the kind with good chicken chop suey in it, or whatever the hell they put in those?

Just bumping this because I tried Fat Kee last night on the recommendations in here and it was great, some of the best stuff I had and the noodles were by far and away the best I had. Also the prices were great as well. $7.50 for regular sized and $9.50 for larger sized dishes.
Thanks for the recommendations and I am sure that this will be our normal place.

I think pearls don't really belong in a frozen drink so I'll get it sans-pearls next time.

And no I don't drive Japanese cars.

I would give the Apple Inn a try.
2409 Edmonton Trl NE
Nothing fancy about the building or the very outdated interior. Clean inside and the service was fantastic. Good portions good price and Great Food!

Can't believe this place is still open. Upstairs right?
Used to go there on Sundays in the mid 80's for beer
and egg rolls. Well mostly beer.

Bubblemania has awful pearls. You're better off changing it up to Lychee jelly or not having any at all. The best bbtea in town is Try Again. It's that little hole in the wall place in Chinatown, downstairs from the HSBC. If you go on the weekends, you can get the mini-pearls, which are pretty much the greatest thing ever.

Edit: and I HATE Dessert House. How is it okay for someone to wait 45 mins for a drink? Terrible! You're better off going to Bubble Station across the street (which is the old Dessert House location).

I've heard of that Bubble Station that took over the old Dessert house, haven't really tried it yet, but heard good things about it, and as for Try Again, they are pretty good as well.

Harvey's (not the hamburger joint) is great, never had an issue with their food.

At least it's not a pearl necklace in a drink.

I've never understood Bubble tea either myself. I've never liked it or Bubble Tea culture. Was at Asian Buffet last night and a bunch of people got Bubble tea @ $4.25 a pop when Kokanee was $2.50 a bottle!
