Default New scam in Calgary!

I know this type of scam isn't new, but a friend of mine just got scammed into paying $800 dollars for a visionmax projector T.V which isn't worth the price at all.

Here is a website I found that talks about it.
http://www.azht.net/forum/showthread.php?t=117513

He was approached at a gas station in Calgary and was told that there was a extra unit delivered to them and they just wanted to sell it fast so they offered to sell it to him for $1500. The price on the box said $6,999 which was obviously (not so obvious to him) fake. He countered with $800 and they accepted and he bought it. The unit apparently works, but is horrible quality and not even worth $150.

Some will say this isn't a scam, but anyways be careful for these guys around Calgary.

Yep, pretty standard scam, it's been going on for years. Although, more commonly they try to sell stereos rather than TV's.

So wait, I SHOULDN'T give hundreds of dollars to people at gas stations selling random electronics without testing them out?

We aren't exactly breaking new ground here.

Yeah I've heard about the sound surround system scam, but this scam seems fairly new, atleast to me.

I wouldn't buy anything from a gas station, but there are definitely people who keep these guys in business.

Edit: Also, I think the more people that know about these scammers the better.

None taken, and I should add this is the same guy who got scammed out of money from a mortgage fraud that I posted about in the mortgage fraud thread from a while ago. Some people never learn.

A buddy of mine got hit by this (speakers) although I'm not sure he ever learned it was a scam. I always thought it best to not tell him.

I got great news for your friend and a way to get him back that money and MORE! I, esteemed colleague, am the prince of Nigeria, and have recently something-or-another and than something else and he'll get $1,000,000. All I need is a cash advance of $1,000. Please send this to him.

Haha my buddy fell for this same scam a dozen years ago when he bought a pair of speakers.

It's amazing how simple the scam is and how it has managed to stay exactly the same.

It's the same scam just with different products.

Thieves have to be innovative too!

You're right, but it was more of a statement than a question. I'll edit the title just for you.

Standard Scam.

That being said, I have enjoyed using 2 $200 stereo systems with $5000 price tags on them. I knew it was a scam and I had heard a friend's system that was the exact same. it worked for the dollar. was prolly worth 150-200, but it makes loud clear noises and has a few hookups
