Best hockey game for the PS2?

I figure that this is a shot in the dark, but what the hell. I still have a PS2 and haven't upgraded, primarily because I have so little time to play video games that it's never really been a priority.
I am looking for the best hockey game for PS2 to have some real couch potato time this weekend. I loved the arcade-ness of NHL 2001, especially for playing against other people...but I would like something that's better in terms of being more of a simulation, and it definitely has to have a reasonably good franchise mode.

What should I buy? What is the best hockey game for the PS2?

 Thanks in advance.

I was hooked to NHL 2007 before getting a PS3.... I recommend that if don't mind the classic controls.

I think the old 2k games were the best, but I can't remember which ones. 2k5 was awesome, but I remember liking them better than EA until NHL 08 came out

In terms of simulation during that time, I liked the 2k series a bit more.. I was an EA fanboy until 2k3, and that was pretty good. But like TopChed said, NHL 08 came out and 2K sports was done.

2k5 by far, the best game of that era. Do you still use a VCR too?

2K5 defiantly. That and 2K3 were the legacy hockey games for 2K in that generation.

I'm telling EA you said that. |

I can't play any NHL games unless it's the latest version out. For some reason I feel like I'm cheating myself if I don't play the most up-to-date game.

NHL 2K5 for sure. The EA games really suffered in the PS2 era and took a turn for the worse when they started concentrating on the 360 and PS3. If you are hunting for an NFL game for cheap on the PS2 then NFL 2K5 is the best NFL game of the PS2 era bar none.

for EA, NHL 06 was the best game on the PS2 I think just because it was actually enjoyable - albeit unrealistic.
But for the system as a whole, NHL 2k5 is the way to go.

NHL Hitz Pro was also a lot of fun (multiplayer).
