Why even trade Chandler for pieces that are much worse?
For money reasons.
They get Dampier's expiring contract, Najera is cheap and only has one year left and they get rid of Chandler's deal.
The Toronto deal may have had more talent but it also came with Calderon's contract.
NBA deals, especially with also-rans like Charlotte, are often more about money than on court issues.
Charlotte aren't doing anything with Chandler in their line-up, aren't doing anything with the poo-poo platter they get from TO or Dallas so may as well save money and free cap space for the FA's they aren't going to sign in the next two seasons.
Chandler was the cog in that deal that made it what it was. But it does go to show you that Calderon's value is quite high when it's essentially a 2 for 1 deal (Evans stank). I thought the style of play would be great with Chandler around, and wish it worked out. Jordan and Co. have done this enough times where now you can almost be sure other teams will be leary of dealing with that group, or will try to lowball them out of spite. I know he's a different player and all, and would change the type of game they'd play, but perhaps Okafor could be acquired. A huge letdown though as Chandler would possibly be the best Centre ever for the Raps. Jordan went for the money and his deal showed. What a baffoon.
Not sure how I'd feel about Barnes. Probably a slight upgrade on Kleiza, but it gives us six wing-players (Barnes, Kleiza, Weems, DeRozan, Bellinelli, Barbosa), all of whom would expect playing time and all of whom would be better suited as first guys off the bench. I can't for the life of me figure out how the minutes would be divided between those six.

I'm sure Colangelo is basically thinking this years FA payouts are huge, and these teams paying max contracts are screwing their teams over bigtime down the road. Having a deep roster is fine for me if they're somewhat rebuilding. Barnes is a good signing at the price. I'm hoping Bellinelli gets dealt in this sign and trade, because there are too many soft guys like him out there on this team. Jordan really screwed over the Raps and for the life of me, I can't get over it.

I don't think he screwed them over. They aren't that much ahead with Chandler on the team. Sure he can play a little defense but like every other player on the team he is a complimentary player that doesn't create his own shot or is an effective scorer at all.
He may have made them a little better but with/without him they still struggle big time.
The Raptors were really screwed over when they hired Coangelo.
Looks like he was right. Orlando didn't have the cap space to do a sign and trade with the Raptors. There's still other ways to get this done... Let's see if that happens.
Wow, at some point this has to affect BC and the Raptors' credibility. Whether it's his fault or not, 2 deals falling through in less than 2 weeks is just not acceptable.
Why sign Kleiza to a MLE in the first place if you wanted Barnes? I'm puzzled by all of this.
