This is the first thing I read today -I was coming down off of working straight through the stampede - and I was so upset. I guess, I just convinced myself otherwise that these matters sort themselves out on their own terms for the better when,in fact, it's the opposite.
This awoke in me something for which I feel tremendous rage. I wanted to cut those poachers arms and human horns right off, myself. But the truth is much more powerful and I capitulate to its power. The truth is like KC has stated.
If anyone has seen the denys arcand film, "les invasions barbares" then you might see a parallel. Basically, this issue is the same problem told from the perspective of heroin trafficking. The protagonist is a funny issue in that the son reconciles and continues the legacy, but the father is eased from his cancer by smoking heroin that his son procures for the sake of salvaging their relationship...I digress, the point is if you get rid of the successful poacher/pusher then someone will step into to take their place.
The cycle, as long as their is inequity and lack of opportunity for people to not satisfy their compelling urge to survive, which is shared throughout society, our species will devastate the natural biological order of our home planet, expensing our own people and the biodiversity of chez nous, because as much as nationalists believe they own their borders, nature will never by dominated by borders, only the laws of its self.
We need harmony and are propagating discord by having people be allowed to take advantage of the comfort we see exploited today. People have it too good in the wealthy capitalistic centers of the planet. I am victim of my decadence and comfort and am motivated by the perceived loss of it. I see so many worse though, but how can I condemn? I can only support earnest and sustainable chance.
Cynically speaking, there seems to be little change enacted in the subsequent areas such as biodiversity, when considering the humanitarian efforts many philanthropists, charity orgs. and nations have purportedly attempted to initiate. I know that there are some efforts that do palpable good. So, Why are the poachers better prepared than the para-militant rangers? I'm just so deflated by the state of reality. However, I won't give up total hope.
Thank you all for your semi-sensitive and capable opinions. I need to do something. I am the common man. What can I do? I will pay for rangers right now. Property rights are the way to go. I often thought of this idea as a young man: private purchase areas of jungle and rainforest and encourage infrastructure for locals to conserve the areas.

I don't hate Asians, however I hate some of their practices when it comes to animal welfare, and conservation. It is a very well documented problem in china, and I don't agree with it. If these types of things were happening in our own back yard I would be equally opposed. Just as I am opposed to seal hunting the way it is carried out, even though there are environmental and economic reasons why the seal population needs to be culled, I still feel it could be done more humanely than bludgeoning them ton death.
Rhino horn consists of compressed keratin fibre – similar to hair – and in many Asian cultures it is a fundamental ingredient in traditional medicines.
is the problem.
I know this statement isn't going to make me popular..... but until Chinese people accept that chopping phallic shaped parts off of animals isn't going to give them super libidos, give them bigger westernized penors, or provide miracle cures, most exotic animals will be extinct by 2050. They are the primary market these poachers cater to. Tigers are all but doomed because the Chinese want their penors, as are countless other exotic creatures. Chinese culture, from what I have seen, has little regard for animal life, and definitely zero regard for conservation. One of the most sickening things I have ever seen is a documentary on how they harvest shark fins. The finners in this video look south Asian, however this is all this is driven by $150 dollar a bowl soup prices in china. Some species of shark have now been depleted by 90% because of this one food item. And the saddest part, is the animal is thrown back in the water finless to basically bleed to death as an amputee on the ocean floor. 90% of the fish goes to waste.
I wont embed this, as it is sad and brutal, but it is pretty informative. It is definitely watch at your own risk:
I understand all cultures differ, but the brutality and disregard for humane treatment of animals in traditional Chinese culture is utterly appalling. They get joy out of deep frying the body of a fish and eating it while its head is still grasping for breath, and apparantly torturing a dog before killing it and skinning it alive makes the meat taste better.
North Americans aren't angels in many areas, and sometimes PETA has some valid points. But at least our main food supply of beef, chicken and pork is sustainable, and typically (as there have been isolated incidents) for the better part, our animals are killed humanely. Until these barbaric practices are stopped, and until someone educates these people that what they are doing is unsustainable, all we will have left is cows and chickens.
Do you have proof that asians actually enjoy deep frying a fish while its head is gasping for air? Is there any backup for you dog statement? Not that I dont believe you, its just that I have never heard such things before.
Call the Vancouver Humane Society...Tell them to picket all those Asian flights coming in out of their own city.
The good news is, it's the last female in that PARK...not the last ever rhino. So the park will recover.
But ya absolutely digusting
With numbers as low as what they are, one female loss can be devastating to the genetic diversity of the species.... and genetic diversity is extemely important to species survival.
Also, if they have to import another female from somewhere else, there is no knowing if it will become adjusted or the others will accept it.

This is what I back up my "dog" statement with, notice the laughter as the taunt the fish, sounds like they are loving it:
This is a common dish in China, so much so they have featured it on cooking show competitions in China where the most moving fish at the table wins.
How many more you want me to post?
Yeah, that is pretty ed.
However, you are being a goof. Take a look at how your silly moral outrage gives you license to stereotype an entire culture based off of a few youtube clips.
It's ok to eat fish because they don't have any feelings.

I read about the dog thing too. I also heard of a practice where they take a bull and force it into a pond filled with leaches. The leaches basically suck the bull dry and are then collected and boiled. Then they are cut open the leaches and the congealed blood inside is eaten like noodles.
If it means anything to you, I asked an older guy that I used to work with about these practices and he said that "weird" people do it... like their version of hillbillies. It's not the norm these days.

No I am not being a goof. That is one of thousands of clips, that show the horrors that take place there daily. Google animal cruelty in China and see the horrors that await. Notice how jing didn't dispute the dog torture claim, and there are numerous sources online with video evidence to back this practice up. Imagine if they didn't have such strict internet censorship, what you would see. It is a FACT that Chinese culture has a lower standard in animal welfare. Again each culture to its own, but I don't have to accept it.

What's the difference between deep frying a live fish vs. putting crabs and lobsters in boiling water? Oh yah, that's right, nothing.
Huge difference. The lobster / crab dies virtually instantly. We don't just boil just the tail eat it while the front half is still alive and clawing at you.

My girlfriend is Cantonese and she's basically said the same thing. But please, continue with the goofy lambasting of an ancient and glorious civilization. More youtube clips!

I respect your posts and always like reading them, but your indignance doesn't make sense. This is a Chinese based thing, how else can you describe it? It IS part of the glorious ancient chinese culture. That doesn't mean all Chinese do it, but there is also no other way to objectively describe it.

I am kind of half-kidding in my indignance. That video was grotesque.
I think the moralism etc... is ridiculous, however. There are practical steps that can be taken to prevent the destruction of endangered species around the globe.
