Winnipeg Beer Snake is dead!
It was kinda cool actually, but i can totally see people getting hurt making it. I'm pretty sure it was thousands and not hundreds
http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/C.../14716591.html
Last week, the fans of Section S in Canad Inns Stadium created what is known as a beer snake — hundreds or maybe even thousands of empty beer cups stacked together to form a line that covered nearly the entire section, reaching into the upper level.
The injuries were suffered when the beer snake fell apart near the end of the game, showering many of the fans not involved. Fans also threw beer cups, hitting some fans and spilling their contents on others.

Take 15 of them. Stack them and then throw them from an elevated position and you'll hurt whoever you hit.
Personally I thought this was a hilarious and awesome trend. Minus the throwing of the cups afterwords.

By consuming 10 beers, the line between making it up the stairs to your seat, and falling down the concrete stairs on your ear is razor thin. Maybe all it took was a little tap from a plastic cup, or a strong breeze to send a few patrons on their merry way.

A pretty cool idea, but I can see why you wouldn't want thousands of fans throwing things. Good idea to shut it down.

I think it is truly awful that they shut it down. Bombers need all the help they can get encouraging young fans to come to games. THey could have developed a great tradition here.
All the organization had to do was say the snake is allowed but harsh penalties would be levied on any people dismantling the snake and throwing cups at other patrons.

Hey I'd love to see the Snake back in Winnipeg but let's be honest there just isn't the corporate sponsorship, and with only a 15,000 seat stadium tickets will be over priced, not to mention that Winnipeg just doesn't have the growth potential of larger cities.

What the hell? You need a long string of plastic cups in the audience to get people to come watch these games? If so, it is a truly, truly pathetic sport.
The organization can't have people being injured at the games, intentionally, or even just by accident in creation of this snake. It would be too hard to manage everyone trying to contribute to the snake and what happens with all the cups. They are doing the right thing. The drunk fans might actually have to watch the game to entertain themselves.

They do realize, that by outlawing this thing, they have essetially guaranteed it makes another appearance next home game.

Really? Without a few morons throwing cups I think it is extremely cool.
THink of the literally dozens of different methods teams use to entice people to attend games, CFL or otherwise.
50/50s, the wave, prizes in between periods/during commercial breaks, launching mini footballs into the crowd etc etc.
Sure, none of those events generally hurt people, but that is my whole point. If you eliminate the morons throwing the cups, the beer snake is a fantastic idea. It creates a buzz and in a CFL market that has potential but has struggled the last few years it could help get young people involved.

Sure it may create a brief bit of buzz, I initially saw it and thought it was cool. But after 2 or 3 games is anyone gonna care? It certainly wouldn't be enough to make me buy tickets.
Besides, from the clip I saw it wasn't a few morons throwing cups, there were people from high up in the stands showering cups down to get this thing built. I don't think anyone thinks its the most dangerous thing to be throwing, but I can see why the organization wouldn't want to take that risk.

The showering down of cups is inexcusable. I just like it when new traditions organically form instead of stupid things that the organization tries to push. Maybe the buzz wouldn't have lasted but anything that gets fans excited is fine by me.

If you were sitting close to it, you'd probably be getting a constant stream of cups being thrown into your section from people who want to contribute to it. This would include people in sections above you.
Beer cups are never ever fully empty and dry. Thus, if you're anywhere near that thing, you'd probably be getting a beer shower for the duration of the game from people throwing "empty" cups at you. I can see how people would complain.
I liked it though, I thought it was hilarious and very original.
