Default When Beavers Attack: Alberta Style

Quote:
Red Deer officials are on the look out for an aggressive beaver believed to be responsible for the death of one dog and injuries to several others in an off-leash park in the city northeast of Calgary. The city has had at least two recent reports and a handful of unconfirmed instances of the beaver attacking dogs at Three Mile Bend park, said Trevor Poth, Red Deer parks supervisor.

Red Deer resident Heather Markiw regularly takes her 10-month-old German Shephard cross dogs to exercise in the park. Last Thursday, one of them, Sierra, had a run-in with a beaver that left her bleeding and injured, Markiw said.

Sierra had to have between 10 and 15 stitches and needs a tube to urinate, said Markiw.

When I was in Dallas we had a university field trip to the science center in Fort Worth so that we could watch an IMAX movie.

It was "Beavers . . . the biggest damn movie ever made"

Of course it was filmed in Banff, and I had a bunch of my class mates convinced that Banff was my backyard back home.

The dogs probably got aggressive or curious and the beaver unleashed on them thinking they were a predator. He managed to kill a Husky which is a pretty capable dog.

Whose thinking cage match between the bad-ass deer and the bad-ass beaver?

And run-ins with them usually end with the need to urinate through a tube.

When I lived in northern Alberta, a beaver wandered up to a neighbour's house and tried to go after their 4 dogs, which were enclosed in a chain link fence pen. It was frothing at the mouth so we had good reason to believe it was rabid, but by the time we got the gun and called Fish and Wildlife to get the go ahead to shoot it (they would have taken well over an hour to get there), it had wandered off.

Just like how real bears aren't as friendly as Yogi, Smokey and Winnie, real beavers can be vicious too. Although I haven't seen it first-hand, apparently they can leap at you from a pretty good distance, so definitely keep well enough away if you ever see one.

He's not talking animals here. IIRC he's on the beaver's team of... enjoying wood.

From my experience the young ones attack morning wood, the older ones wait until the evening to attack, normally provoked by wine.
