Does anyone on Calgarypuck play PowerPlay Manager?
I've started playing a free online hockey manager game called powerplay manager, I've become completely addicted by it even though my team is in league IV, it's just very fun having control of every aspect of a team (and I mean every aspect). Just wondering if anyone else from calgarypuck is signed up for it, or if any other members would want to join. Here's 2 links for it, the first would help me out get free credits, but for all those that want to check this site out without it looking like i'm soliciting on this forum, the second link is just the link to the site

bump.
If anyone has any questions on the game, please feel free to pm me or post here, the game takes about 10 days until all the features are available to you so you don't make any stupid mistakes with your team, but even in the first 10 days of playing the game I became pretty addicted. My team has a 10 game unbeaten streak right now, with 7 games before playoffs to start.

For those that want to know a more in depth idea of what the game is, here's the guide that you can read. If you decide to join the game I highly advise you to read the guide before making decisions for your team.
Powerplay Hockey Manager Guide
Welcome to Powerplay Hockey Manager.
In Powerplay Hockey Manager, you run your own team. You can buy or sell players or staff on the market. Build up your arena and teams facilities, and train your players into superstars.
Facilities
When you first begin your best bet would be to spend your money improving your arena to increase your revenue from attendance and your facilities to improve your team in the future.
A quick explanation of what each Facility is for:
1) Training Facility - Training facility provides conditions where players can train and practice to improve as effectively as possible. You can hire a staff member - coach to increase the influence of the training facility.
2) Regeneration Facility - Games and practices are tiresome for players, so they are unable to train efficiently and the risk of injury increases. By building the regeneration facility you can avoid this problem. You can hire a staff member - physiotherapist to increase the influence of the regeneration facility.
3) Human Resources and Economic Department - Easier negotiations with the sponsor, better souvenir sale, employing better staff members or cheaper and more accurate scouting of your own players as well as the players of your opponents will be facilitated by this department. You can hire a staff member - manager to increase the influence of the human resources and economic department.
4) Maintenance Center - Every arena in the world is subject to wear and tear over time. To minimize your maintenance costs and to avoid greater damage by the fans, you need to build up a maintenance center. You can hire a staff member - arena custodian to increase the influence of the maintenance center.
5) Education Center - If you would like your staff to continue in their improvement and training, you need to invest into the education center. You can hire a staff member - lecturer to increase the influence of the education center.
6) Sports Academy - The level of your sports academy determines how your club brings up juniors. The higher the level, the more juniors will be coming out and the better prepared they will be. Your senior players also go to the sports academy for camps where they improve their skills faster. You can hire a staff member - sporting director to increase the influence of the sports academy.
7) Medical Center - Injuries are a disaster for any team. To decrease the probability of injuries and to speed up the recovery of players after injuries you can build a medical center. You can hire a staff member - physician to increase the influence of the medical center.
As you can tell there are a few that are more helpful to get you on your way. Such as the Sports Academy to improve players that come to your team and the Training Facility to help improve players that you have on your roster.
As for the Staff Pulls/Youth Pulls. They take place on Thursdays. They alternate every other week. So one week it will be new players available for you, the next Thursday it will be new staff members.
Staff
There are 7 different types of staff members available to your team. You can get staff through your staff pulls, or on the staff market. (I would not recommend spending much for staff on the market, especially early on). As for the 7 different types of staff. Here is each type with a short explanation as to what they will do to help your team.
1) Coach is a staff member that works in the training facility. His attributes are:
* Defence coaching – this attribute indicates the ability to train the defensive attributes of players (goaltending, defence, aggressiveness, technique)
* Offence coaching – this attribute indicates the ability to train the offensive attributes of players (offence, shooting, passing)
If your player is assigned to practise offence, for example, then the improvement rate will increase with the rising efficiency of offence coaching of your coaches. The efficiency of an attribute is a percentage of influence that your staff have on their facility. The maximum efficiency is therefore 100%. This efficiency depends on the value of the respective attribute of your head staff member and his assistant. The maximum attribute value of a staff member is 100, which means that the best possible staff member can have 200 points in attributes.
2) Physiotherapist is a staff member working in the regeneration facility. His attributes are:
* Defence regeneration – this attribute indicates the ability to regenerate players, who practise defensive attributes (goaltending, defence, aggressiveness, technique)
* Offence regeneration – this attribute indicates the ability to regenerate players, who practise offensive attributes (offence, shooting, passing)
3) Manager is a staff member working in the human resources and economic department. His attributes are:
* Scouting - this attribute indicates the ability to make precise estimates on the quality of players and staff and it also influences the speed of scouting of people in the scouting queue. The attribute also indicates the ability to provide more job applicants.
* Marketing - this attribute indicates the ability to negotiate with sponsors and TV companies in order to get the best contract possible.
4) Arena custodian is a staff member working in the maintenance center. His attributes are:
* Security service - this attribute indicates the ability to eliminate vandalism in the arena and thus lower the expenses on maintenance of the stands and their accessories.
* Maintenance - this attribute indicates the ability to fix the glitches that occur in the facilities and therefore lower the expenses on the maintenance of the facilities.
5) Lecturer is a staff member working in the education center. His attributes are:
* Management training - this attribute indicates the ability to train the following staff members: manager, sporting director and arena custodian.
* Practical training - this attribute indicates the ability to train the following staff members: coach, physiotherapist and physician.
Lecturers train themselves and both of their attributes are applied during their training!
6) Sporting Director is a staff member working in the sports academy. His attributes are:
* Youth training - this attribute indicates the ability to provide more juniors coming from the sports academy. The attribute also influences the overall rating of the young prospects coming to your team for a trial.
* Player training - this attribute indicates the ability to organize training camps for more players while ensuring a higher training bonus of the camp.
7) Physician is a staff member working in the medical center. His attributes are:
* Prevention - this attribute indicates the ability to minimize the number of injuries to your players.
* Treatment - this attribute indicates the ability to speed up the recovery time of the injured players.
Facts about Staff Members:
- if you have a facility at a higher level, the applicants for a job at this facility will likely have higher attributes
- You may have two staff members of each type (one head, and one assistant for each type)

Preparing for the Games
To prepare for each game you are able to set the importance of the game to your team, change your lines, and change your teams style of play.
The higher level of importance you play on, the more your players will fatigue. Fatigue is restored at the beginning of each season. Each player will have the same amount of energy to start the season, but it is your responsibility to keep an eye on this throughout the season. As your players fatigue, they will start to play worse. It is important to try and save energy for the playoffs if you plan on being successful in the playoffs.
The next component of preparing for games are is changing your lines. You can change your forwards, defense, starting goalie, special teams, captaincy, and your shootout lineup.
Then there is your style of play. There are 6 styles of play you can have your team play. Here is a quick explanation on what each style of play is all about.
Defensive Style of Play: If you select defensive style of play, your players have a defensive mindset. The forwards are helping as much as they can in the defensive tasks. This tactical option is useful especially against a stronger opponent, which is expected to dominate in the offence.
Offensive Style of Play: If you like offensive hockey and you would like your team to play in an attractive and offensive style, select this style of play for the game. With this style of play, the forwards are very well supported by the defensemen in their offensive game. However, the use of these tactics should be chosen wisely, because sometimes your players leave the door open and there is a risk of odd man rushes against your team.
Counterattacks: If you select this style of play, your players play a solid defensive game and they are looking for breakaways and odd man rushes. However, counterattacks are not very effective against team with a solid defensive game. This style of play also requires skilled wingers and a solid center who knows how to do his defensive duties.
Breaking Up of Play: If you select this style of play, your players are trying to cause as many interruptions in the game as possible to break the rhythm of a substantially stronger team so that it can't put your team under pressure. Whenever your team is about to get under pressure, your players prefer to ice the puck and the goalie prefers to cover up the puck instead of playing it.
Active Forechecking: Most players make mistakes when they are under pressure. That is the cornerstone of this style of play. Your forwards try to put the opposing players under pressure by a high forecheck in the offensive zone to create turnovers and thus create scoring chances.
Normal Style of Play: This is the regular style of play whereby the players hold on to their primary tasks. The defensemen play defensively and the forwards concentrate on the offense. It might seem too simple at first sight, but it is often more effective than complicated tactical maneuvers for which your players might not be skilled enough.
Players
Position - Primary Attribute - Secondary Attribute - Secondary Attribute
Goalie - Goaltending - Technique - Passing
Defenseman - Defense - Passing - Aggresiveness
Center - Offense - Passing - Technique
Winger - Offense - Technique - Aggressiveness
Of course Shooting is also a helpful stat for some defenseman, and forwards.
Stat Descriptions
Goaltending: This attribute is only used by the goalies. It represents the ability of a goalie to stop the pucks from going into the net. High value of this attribute helps the goalie keep a good save percentage.
Defense: This attribute is used by all the players to stop the opponent from scoring by not letting him create scoring chances. It is used mainly by defensemen but it is also useful for forwards who need it in order to contribute to the defensive play of the team.
Offense: The offense attribute determines the ability to play effectively in the offensive zone. It represents the ability of players to create a scoring position and it also represents the ratio of how often the player will shoot in a good scoring position. Players with lower offense attribute often elect to pass even if they should rather take a shot. For defensemen it determines their ability to contribute to the offensive play of the team.
Technique: This attribute is very universal. Goalies use it to increase their save percentage thanks to better reactions and good positioning. In defense it is required mainly for one-on-one battles. It helps the defensemen win these battles thanks to good stickhandling and speed and decrease the number of penalties. A forward with a good technique can be effective in one-on-one battles thanks to very good stickhandling and good speed. Technique also helps you to win faceoffs.
Passing: This attribute is important for all the players just like technique. For goalie, this attribute represents his ability to use his stick, not only to make passes, but also to eliminate scoring chances of the opponent. For the skaters it represents the ability to make proper passes and to create chances with good puck movement and playmaking. Passing, among other things, also helps the players on the powerplay to create scoring chances thanks to quick and sharp puck movement.
Aggressiveness: Aggressiveness is mainly used by defensemen and wingers. Defensmen utilize it to strip the attacking players of the puck with their physical play. Without a sufficient aggressiveness rating your defense would be easy to break through. Wingers, on the other hand, use this attribute to get into scoring chances through physical force. This attribute also represents the forechecking ability of players. However, it also has a down side. Players with high aggressiveness rating and poor technique are often penalized. Players like these can only be effective with their physical play, which logically results in more frequent penalties.
Shooting: The shooting attribute is important for all the players, except the goalie, to score goals. The higher the shooting rating, the higher the possibility that the player will capitalize on his scoring chance. Defensemen with good shooting tend to score more goals from the point.
Preferred side
Some players have a preferred side, depending on which side of the ice they like to play. Others - universals, play equally well on both sides. Therefore, no matter which side the player prefers he can play a center, but a left wing and a left denfenseman should be someone who prefers to play on the left. The right wing and the right side of the defense should be occupied by players who prefer to play on the right. If a player plays on the wrong side, he cannot fully use his abilities.
Career longevity
Another important characteristic of a player is his career longevity. Career longevity indicates for how long the player will be able to improve. Career longevity has six levels. If a player reaches the lowest level - 1/6, he stops improving and his attributes may even decrease. The speed of deterioration of attributes increases with age.
Popularity
Each player has a certain level of popularity, which indicates how popular he is amongst the fans. Popularity rises with his performance and with his position in the league statistics. Popularity rises faster in the higher divisions. The levels of popularity from the lowest to the highest are: Unknown, Known, Popular, Admired, Famous, Celebrity, Worldwide Star and Superstar. There are two main advantages to having popular players on the team. They increase game attendance and also the souvenir sale.

Guide Continued
Warning! Popularity of a player may also decrease. The more popular the player is, the more popularity points he loses after a bad game. This does not apply to friendly and tournament games which have no influence on the popularity of the players.
Energy
The energy of a player is indicated by two numbers - current energy and seasonal energy. This is displayed in the following format: e.g. 80/100. The first number indicates the current energy of a player, i.e. the energy that a player has at the given moment. The second number is the seasonal energy and it is the maximum energy that a player can reach during that season. The seasonal energy decreases as the number of games played by the player increases. It decreases faster, if the games are played with high importance. Therefore the seasonal energy cannot be increased. It is recharged to the maximum at the beginning of a new season, after the main seasonal calculation. The energy of a player is very important as low energy levels harm the performance of the player in the games. Each player, whose current energy has dropped after a game, regains it back to the maximum seasonal energy automatically by a regeneration process.
Injuries
Hockey is a tough sport, so injuries are quite common. In PowerPlay Manager the maximum length of injury recovery is 28 days. However, injuries that last up to two weeks are more common. The frequency of injuries in your team is inluenced by a number of factors. A team with a higher number of players will logically have more injuries. You will have less injuries and the recovery time will be shorter, if you have a high level of medical center and if you employ good physicians.
Experience
Experience is gained by playing games. The more difficult the games are, the more experience the player gains. Experience has a direct influence on the player's performance in the games.
The experience gained by the players depends on the number of periods played. If a team rolls three lines, the fourth line players do not gain any experience. On the other hand players from the first three lines gain experience faster when the team rolls only three lines.
Player dismissal
If a player, whose overall rating is higher than 250, is dismissed, this player will automatically go on the market, where other managers will be able to bid for him. If his overall rating is lower, the player will retire. If a player is not dismissed but his contract expires, this player will automatically go to the market regardless of his overall rating.
Other Facts
Manager Experience - Each day that you log onto your Powerplay account your Manager Experience will go up one. As your Manager Experience goes up you will gain more things you can do.
For example
When your Manager Experience reaches 11, you will be able to take out a loan, buy and sell players and staff members on the market, and vote for a National Team Manager.
When your Manager Experience reaches 51, you will be able to get a larger loan, PRO Pack for 7 days, and the option to run for National Team Manager.
When your Manager Experience reaches 101, you will be able to
take out a Large loan.
League Standings and Prize Money
Scoring system
Regular season has the following scoring system:
Win in regulation: 3 points
Overtime win: 2 points
Tie: 1 point
Overtime loss: 1 point
Loss in regulation: 0 points
Prize Money will be rewarded at the end of the Season/Playoffs.
You can receive prize money depending on your place in the standings, your final place in the playoffs, and your players individual stats at the end of the season.
Sponsor/TV Rights Money
Every Wednesday you will receive money from your teams Sponsor and TV deal. The amount will vary depending on the quality of your deals and team.
In the off season when the contracts are up you will get a chance to get a new contract.
The sponsorship and tv deals for the upcoming season are negotiated at the end of each season. The club will get three offers on three consecutive days. If you accept the first offer, the club will not receive further offers. If you do not accept any of the three offers, the owners will sign a sponsorship deal with a new company on the following day even without your approval. The sum offered by the sponsor will be divided into regular weekly payments, which will be transfered to the club's account each Wednesday. To help you make a decision, the human resources and economic department will give their recommendation on each offer. The amount of money you get from the sponsor is influenced mainly by: the final ranking in the recently ended season, the overall team rating and the level of the human resources and economic department. The first offer arrives on the last Thursday of the season which is day 109 of the season.

So season 5 just started for this game on Monday, it's a perfect opportunity now to create a team. I'm now on my third season in this game and still very addicted, my team won promotion again so I'm now in League II.1, which is the second best.
Again, the link is:

Some of you have joined that I saw, so it would be cool if more CP'ers joined this league.

It takes about 10 days of patience, then it starts getting to be a lot of fun. They put restrictions to begin with so you don't royally screw over your team before you actually know how to play the game. What league did they put you in?

Upgraded my Training and Academy, then hired a coach.
Auto-set my lines, then tinkered with them a bit based on preferred side.
What else should I be doing to start?

With your lines, make sure you put players with higher passing as center, and the ones with higher aggressiveness as wingers, but those are the secondary skills they use more often. Umm have you checked the sports academy (in the arena section) for any players available from there yet? there may be one.
Since there is a game tomorrow you should set your tactics for it. That's in the game section. This early in the season you should probably be playing on low importance to save the energy of players, because they get a lot worse if they lose energy throughout the year, and you can't get them to regain the energy again. So try staying on Low for most of the year (until playoffs of course). It's not in the guide, but there is a set up of different tactics that work well against others, found out by some nerds who did a bunch of stuff on excel to figure it out:
It seams that the primary ring of tactics-countertactics looks as follows.
* Normal beats Defensive
* Defensive beats Offensive
* Offensive beats Forechecking
* Forechecking beats Counterattacks
* Counterattacks beats Breaking
* Breaking beats normal
After that you can probably call it a night! haha good luck!

First game played and my team got a 2-2 tie (though they got rid of those??), which isn't too bad considering the other team was much better!
Question for kendal (I accepted your friend request)
-Should you always recruit players from the sports acadamy? If not, what rating is 'worth' keeping?
-How do you challange people to 'friendly' games?
-Does everything update at the end of the day? (stats, player exp etc..)
Thanks!

Hey,
So you should recruit all players right now because your scouting is so bad right now that you don't actually know if they are good players or not yet. Once you reach 30-35 players on your roster, or upgrade human resources to at least 3 should you get more specific. Only pick up players with 3 stars and above after that.
To challenge people to friendlies you go onto their page, find their calander, find a day that has a green symbol on it, click it and press challenge.
And yes, everything updates at the end of the day. At 9:30 PM calgary time you should be able to see updated practice improvements, the next game day, new injuries and expired contracts etc.
Glad the game is catching on for you, good luck again!
