Here is the thing with flight sims - they are still with us, and are still fantastic. What you think is a demise isn’t - the number of titles is roughly the same, they are just dwarfed by the sheer number of games in other genres.

Check out Rise of Flight for an example of a modern flight sim. Very pretty, very hard. There is also a fantastic looking A-10 simulator in the works by the guys that did LOMAC which also looks very pretty and extremely detailed in operation (think Falcon 4.0)

Even more amazing is that IL-2 was released for the PS3, and stayed pretty true to the formula - airplanes will stall and spin viciously in the realistic flight mode, which is an enormous departure from every other console flight sim out there.

On the civil sim front, FSX is still going strong in the developer community, and X-Plane has made great strides, in my opinion. The quality of add-on aircraft like x737 is staggering. I’m on X-Plane now as my sole sim because I don’t like the idea of being wedded to a flight simulator that has been discontinued, and yet requires activation, and I don’t regret it at all. It’s a good piece of software.

Another interesting spin on the flight sim category is the emergence of really good RC Flight simulator titles. The latest version of RealFlight is great for keeping in shape over the winter, and the kids at the flying field that I’ve seen who have trained up on RealFlight as only a 16 year old video-game addicted kid can, are absolutely unreal when they get into the air for real.

You're not the only one. My goal is to find a job in Calgary, start up an indie company and look for other people around Calgary who want to get into the game industry without leaving the city. I have a few ideas in my head but there's one that sticks out.

Sure it's a huge risk financially but I'd rather fail knowing I tried than wonder what might have been. I've done texture art and 3D modeling work for an indie game company so I know the risks and struggles but I've also seen the mistakes the owner made and would try to do things different.

Few months ago I would of said SC2... now I just realize I wasn't ever a big RTS player... I only played the custom maps like turret defence, marine wars, special forces etc...

Diablo 3. What can I say, it is a MUST purchase. This is the only reason why I think I should invest in better computer than what I have now.

WoW: Cataclysm, been playing WoW for 3-4 years off and on, and I just keep coming back.... looking forward to a fresh new start in new content.

COD: Black Ops... sick of MW2, that's all.

NHL 11.... duh.

Uncharted 2 is the most fun I've ever had playing a video game.
Plus it's just friggin' beautiful.
Obviously it's pretty linear...which is, I guess, the only thing you could take away from it.
Some people just like those kind of games...and others like changing cool outfits on their character and killing wolves while riding around aimlessly.

While you may dead on about the flight sims, Hack&Lube is right that a good space sim hasn't come out in years.

The last game I can think of from that genre is Freelancer.

Uncharted is one of those games that you can finish in a few days but it doesn't leave you feeling you wasted money on something that took you days instead of weeks.

I think it's because of the whole movie feel it gives you. I had that same feeling with Alan Wake. Sure you pretty much just shoot shadow people and objects but it was one of those games that I just could not stop playing until I finished the chapter. And the chapters seemed pretty lengthy as well.

Yeah, a decent space sim would be good.

Pretty sure he's talking about the new X-COM which is going to be satirical 1950s alien invasion movie story that is a first person shooter. Fallout going from 2D to FPS was bad enough...I can't imagine what the new X-COM will have in common with the original (one of the best games ever made in terms of gameplay despite how primitive it was) aside from the alien invasion angle and the name.

Wow, I never knew how beautiful that engine was with textured ships. I played through most of that series with flat Gouraud shaded polygons.

3rded. It was an interactive movie where their idea of pumping up difficulty was making you face a ton of enemies wearing t-shirts who were bullet sponges. I would have liked the game as exploration only and without Drake being as strong and agile as Spider-Man.

Well then, it was the best interactive movie I've ever seen. I had an absolute blast playing it, and really enjoyed the story and voice acting. I would have liked more exploration as well, but I wasn't about to complain.

It feels like things are going backward and people are settling for less than what things should be.

I should be excited for Starcraft 2 but BattleNet 2.0 leaves much to be desired and tempers my enthusiasm for the parts of the game that I value which are custom maps (which now are 1MB restricted, must be hosted on Blizzard servers, only one version with one name can exist at once, there is no lobby/chat system to organize custom games, etc).

I wanted to love Fallout 3 but they were terribly disappointing, just Oblivion with guns and the Gamebyro engine looks horrible with the color palatte and texture style of Fallout. Fails to live up to the originals in every way.
Weird, ign just put up an article in response to these complaints.

I don't agree or disagree but there are original games coming out, just not big budget. Most of them are either digital downloads or found on handhelds.

Aw man, you had to mention Gouraud shading. That and voxel based engines were the things on a game box that warmed my heart back in the day.

That sucks - I would love a remake of X-COM
