So being smart and hardworking means she has no chance of being successful because she didn't have a social life in high school? What about the kids who play video games and/or watch TV or sit 6 hours a day? There are a ton of those in society today. Are they doomed to failure as well? About as much chance of a social life there.

I would pick the smart kid over the video game player any day of week. She does need to learn a little bit of moderation though.

I agree. There just isn't that much to study.

I am willing to bet those study times were not always that long. Especially with volunteering it mentions in the article.

The assumption that everyone smart has no life or social skills is absurd.
Its not that shes smart that makes me think she has no social skills its the 8 hours/day spent studying. HS ends at what, 4pm? so to get home and study for 8 hours you are going till 12-1am assuming she stopped to eat or go to the bathroom once in awhile.

What accounts for good social skills in high school these days anyways? Ed Hardy t-shirts and knowing the latest Lady Gaga hit? She's not missing much.

I would say that the assertion that someone who spends 6-8 hours a day studying has no life or social skills has grounds.

There is only so much time to go around, if you're in school from 8-3 and you're studying from 4-10+ then there isnt much time for anything else.

Quite a bit of hate on for somebody that's had some academic success, not sure why.

Best years? Um maybe?? I guess there has to be a percentage of the population for whom things go totally down the toilet for the rest of your life after highschool.

Another article on her in the Toronto Star

But she also took time for herself, going out with friends to art galleries, fringe festivals and music concerts.

“I had a really good social life this year for some reason,” she said. “It was the best year for everything.”

This fall, Smrke heads to McMaster University in Hamilton for its prestigious arts and science program.

One drove an awesome Frod Probe and had the best years of his life. Now he still has that beauty of a car and looks ridiculous as a 28 year old with such a crappy, loud, annoying exhaust as he pulls into Radio Shack for his evening shift.

The other didn't have such a cool ride, and had trouble picking up the grade 10 girls when he was in grade 12. Ford Probe got them all.

amirite?

Then she's exaggerating the 6-8 hours a day. I bet she probably studied 6-8 hours during the final 2 or 3 weeks leading up to the finals rather than actually studying 6-8 hours every day of her high school life. That would truly be a waste if that was true.

Edit: Just read that she was only talking about the last year of high school. My point still stands though.

Well, most HS leave periods where you can study. Unless she maxed out on all her classes.

I also think her volunteering is going to teach her all the social skills she needs.

Hardly. Life certainly hasnt hit the toilet for me. I just think its ridiculous to spend 8 hours a night studying during your late teens.

She could not have studied that much every day.

It is quite possible she spent that much on some days though.

You are right.

Chances are she didn't actually spend that much every single day, or even most days.

That makes more sense. THe way its insinuated means that she would have been totally isolated.

Well, she got good grades, spent time with her friends and had fun. Good on Nerdo.

I also tend to take everything the media writes with a grain of salt. I mean, the poor girl could have said "oh, I study everyday, sometimes up to 6-8 hours depending on what I'm studying". The media then decides to run with the "6-8 hours a day" and cut out the rest in order to make the story even more heroic. I find this tends to happen a lot with any story the media writes.
