I've heard good things about Pebble Street. Located in Pacific Place Mall (formally Franklin).
Even Asians eat there! lol

Not in the NE but the best Chinese in the entire city is at Peking Garden in Varsity in the NW

Just watch out for that nasty lawyer whose office is located 2 doors down from them. You could die if you park in one of their stalls. hehe

Just a heads up with Peking Garden. They only have their authentic shanghai menu for lunch on the weekends. During the weekdays it's gwai lo food. hehe

In the NW Snow Palace in Crowfoot is my go to place, and my Chinese in-laws approve.

However, they'll default to the gwai lo menu unless you ask for the Chinese one.

Heck yeah for Fat Kee. They are one of the places you might want to walk right out after seeing the place but it is actually pretty good. The Chines equivalent of a greasy spoon. Salt and Pepper Beef and some Shanghai Noodles...yum.

Yeah Fat Kee's a staple at my house. Their duck and noodle soup is the best evar! Falls right off the bone... *drools* (note that this is not on their menu...it's on the white board at the back, written in Chinese only..).

Pebble Street used to be the HK restaurant I'd go to, but then they opened T.Pot by my house, so no need for me to go that far anymore.

Edit: Singapore Sam should be avoided at ANY costs. It's like the Lindsay Lohan of Chinese Restaurants: Dirty and responsible for multiple violations.

Best place for dim sum right now is at the cultural centre. EVERYTHING is only $2.99 too. Good luck finding a table on the weekend though.

I don't mind the dim sum. At least it comes out piping hot. The HK side is pretty much the same as Pebble Street. The other side has really good dinner dishes.

A few weeks ago I went to place in Hunterhorn Plaza off of 64th that had good dim sum. Can't remember the name, but the joint used to be a Pizza Hut.

Picked up from Fat Kee on the recommendation of urbanspoon a couple of months ago, and it was really good.

The inside of the restaurant was pretty much as plain as a restaurant could be.

Decor - Terrible, clean at least.
Food - Excellent.
Price - also excellent.

As a chinese person who only gets to eat "real chinese food" ordered from the chinese only menu when out with family dinner...but who finds it unappetizing, I am curious, what kinds of food do you guys typically order?

Chicken wings
Egg Roll
wonton soup/war wonton
special fried rice
some kind of chop suey
beef & broccoli/ beef & black bean/ginger beef is popular
almond gai ding/almond chicken
Szechuan something, prawns ?
dry or honey garlic ribs are always good
Lots of people like sweet&sour chicken balls??

Yum. Those are the good things as far as I'm concerned

I don't even know how to translate the stuff we order sometimes. Lots of vegetable dishes with garlic, crab dishes where the brain is the delicacy for my grandparents, drunken chicken, lots of cool dishes where the full head of the animal comes with it, shark fin soup on special occasions, a traditional appetizer could include pig ears and jellyfish.

Generally smaller animals like fish and fowl. Remember that fried chicken scandal with the fried head? Think that. Was always fun for us kids to do dissections at during dinner. My grandmother used to like eating the fish eyes.
