I don't think it counts as a hidden gem if it's been around for years.
Granted I'm pretty sure this is just the second year for the wine bar, but the Western Art Showcase has been going on for years.

That being said, it is one of my favourite parts of the Stampede. I spent a few hours there on Saturday drinking wine.

You're right Shantz, but I believe this is the 2nd year that they have done the whole "oasis" setup with plants and water features, making it a very nice area to spend some time to relax in.

Whew...got down to the grounds for the first time last night. A buddy of mine got tickets to the rodeo and they were in the in-field. Drinking started at 1:30 and the rodeo was fantastic. (minus the 30 minute storm and poor young rider and horse that got injured)
Followed that up with Nashville North for 4 hours where I somehow drank enough to convince myself to go on both the slingshot and then the skyscraper. Both rides were awesome for a wuss like me and I'm glad I finally built up enough (liquid) courage to ride them.

Now it's 9:21 in the morning and my head hurts...and this monitor i'm staring at is blinding me...but what a great night!

I'm absolutely loving everyone hating on the Young Canadians. I used to be in the Stampede Showband and we had to work with them for the Grandstand Show. They were always so hardcore about their lip syncing and thrusting and the whole show was really just a big joke for us. It was a lot of fun to perform in, but I don't know how people can possibly take it seriously. Though I've never actually watched it, I don't think I want to, especially after hearing about this MJ tribute.
I had never seen the wine garden before, but sure spend a lot of time there on Saturday. It was a good time, and a nice change from hanging out in the beer gardens all day. There was some cheesy figure skating thing on the Corral, and the band was pretty bad, but I enjoyed most of the acrobatics/skating. Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir (Ice Dance gold medalists from Vancouver) were there though, and that made it worth it. If you've got children, the Stampede Showband performs a more kid oriented show on the Plaza stage at noon everyday. The last few years it's been a Dr. Seuss theme, and Harry the Horse is there... not too sure about this year though. They also perform at 8:00 every night. It's just good music more than anything. At the end of the night (10:45ish maybe?) we checked out the Bell Circus where they have the BMX shows, and they had some dive team there. It was really neat, they had drummers, and people spinning poles lit on fire while these divers dive into a pool from way up high. At the end, they light a chick on fire, and she dives into the pool and the fireworks start right as she hits the water, and you've got a great view of the fireworks from the bleachers.

Another shameless plug... if you're going down today and want to get in from the cold-ish weather, there's a marching band competition in the Saddledome. It starts at 1:00 and runs for maybe two and a half hours, and finals start at 6:00. There are a lot of good bands, and most of them just finished touring around the States and are at their best. The Stampede Band went undefeated, and won every award that was given out over the week and a half or so they were down there. I might be a little bias, but it's not as lame as you might think!

Just a few things that hadn't been mentioned that I thought people might enjoy.

I used to be in Stampede Band too! And yeah, the YC's are a joke. Funny story though, when I was in high school there was this guy who acted so 'gangsta' it was stupid. He had girls left right and centre and treated everyone who wasn't all hardcore gangsta like crap. Wore all the clothes, baggy jeans, wallet chain, blah blah blah. Months later it comes time to work the Grandstand show and there he is, dressed up in the gay costumes pracing around like a phag. It was hilarious. When he saw me he tried to befriend me so he could ask me not to tell anyone. Hahaha, I ruined that poor at school.

Its not lame at all. Its feaking awesome. I got to go to the WMC in Kerkrade in the Netherlands back in '01 and at the end of our show there was almost a riot. 20,000 people screaming "CAN-A-DA! CAN-A-DA!" while lighting up flares in the stands and trying to storm the field. They love bands over there, to the point of hooliganism!

And for the CSSB to go undefeated this year, on an American tour and sweep everything is an absolute mind-blower. I remember after my time in the band they had some leaner years, but now it seems they're back to their traditionally eliete calibre. I can't wait for the show tonight.

And its in the dome, so you wont get rained on. Lol. I'm gonna get drunk...

Yes. Easier, actually. You don't have any time to do anything else. When your in CSSB, you go to school or work, and then band. Thats it. So eventually everyone gets really horny, pardon the pun.

No, the kids in Drama class aren't eliete level and world renownd. We were the only non-millitary band to ever play Buckingham palace, for a start. In the roundup centre you can go check out the trophy case.

Awww. Now I'm getting all nostalgic. My last season was 2002.

As a girl band nerd, I'm going to have to disagree with the being easy part. Maybe I'm the exception? Though being in the drumline with a bunch of guys, I heard about enough of "those" girls, so maybe it is true...

I'll be at the dome tonight too, and will likely also be drunk. Their show this year is Jesus Christ Superstar, and a lot of it is straight from the Scouts 99 show. I heard them on Saturday and it sounded sooooooo good. I'm stoked to see it on the field.

I was totally expecting everyone to just make fun of me for being in band... mostly with "This one time at band camp". It's actually crazy how you can go almost anywhere and find someone who's marched somewhere. I love it. I'm getting all nostalgic too, though my last year was only 2008 (I quit half way through). I was in my first year of CRUB in 2002. Joining band was easilly the best thing I've done with my life to this point. I've got to do sooo many things I never would've been able to do otherwise. I'm so jealous though... I would have killed to go to WMC.

Marching is the second biggest sport in the world next to soccer. No joke.
