I'm just glad the two biggest atrocities from last season, rebounding and defense, have been somewhat addressed this offseason. BC is building a nice team and all these expiring contracts (Banks, Evans, Chandler, Diaw, etc) will be valuable trading chips come next season.

Crazy stuff. Iactually liked Calderon and would have prefered to keep him over Jack, but the amount of flexibility Colangelo is creating is fantastic... Perfect for a rebuilding team. There will be lots of cap space next season to go get a big FA, and there just might be a couple great international players available who would consider signing in Toronto.
I'd still like to see him acquire Collison from the Hornets. He would be the perfect PG for this team moving forward.

The raptors will do crap all until they can rebound and play defense. Something they have not done or could not do since JYD and Antonio Davis left town. Amazing how this team is near the cap now with the roster of players they have. It's like the 2009 Oilers.

Except that Chandler and Diaw add both of those elements.

Given what BC had to work with, if all these pieces were to materialize this team is as athletic and deep as it's ever been. No more watching them get outworked, outmuscled, each and every night.

I like this a lot, calderon is made of glass and those guys we're bringing in are all good and have expiring contracts in a year or two. No anchor contracts.

According to Doug Smith of the STAR the TPE is not included in the deal. Another piece (Evans or Banks) would be involved if this were the case.

Wow, would the Raps have flexiblity if BC were to pull this off.

I PVRed and half-watched some summer league ball on RapsTV, Sonny Weems was ripping it up.

I'm looking forward to seeing an offense run through Bargs.

Yeah, I really liked what I saw from Weems, but the highlight for me was Davis. Way more polished than I expected. This guy isn't going to be the long-term project that pundits were talking about on draft night. On the other hand, man is Alibi's offensive game rough...

Portland signed Wesley Matthews to a 33 million dollar offer sheet. Not bad for a guy who made in the ballpark of 500 grand last year with the Jazz.

I think the Raptors really lucked out getting Davis at 13. Granted it's summer league but he looked great out there. If the trade for Chandler goes through the Raptors might actually grab some boards this year.

I'm not sure if that's true. Pro athletes pay tax in every state they play in as far as I know.

Can someone explain what exactly the TPE from Miami gives to the Raptors?

Is that money they can spend over the cap this year?

Wow, I thought Turk's contract would be way harder to get rid off. Too bad it's Phoenix picking it up though, as I like them too.

They are allowed to acquire up to $16 M in salaries without shipping out any players. It expires one year from the date of the transaction.

http://deadspin.com/5585009/timofey-mozgov-is-

NSFW language. Deadspin has a parody post about a Russian basketball player that pulled the same kind of stunts as Lebron. I bet that url doesn't get past the obscenity filter.

EDIT: Nope it didn't. Try this link instead: http://tiny.cc/x9of4

I am still unclear what this means. Can you give an example?

So if Toronto has a really bad contract they can send it Miami for free?

In the NBA when you make a trade the salaries of the players involved have to match within 10 or 12% or something. Not sure of the exact number.

Edit: 25% + $100k
Quote:
Teams above the cap (or teams below the cap but would end up more than $100,000 over the cap following a trade) cannot acquire more than 125% plus $100,000 of the salary they trade away. There is no lower limit—teams may divest themselves of as much salary as they wish in a trade.
With the trade exception, the Raptors can trade for up to $16 million worth of salary while giving up nothing.

Quote:
Traded Player Exception: If a team trades away a player with a higher salary than the player they acquire in return (we'll call this initial deal "Trade #1"), they receive what is called a Traded Player Exception, also known colloquially as a "Trade Exception". Teams with a trade exception have up to a year in which they can acquire more salary in other trades (Trade #2, #3, etc) than they send away, as long as the gulf in salaries for Trade #2, #3, etc are less than or equal to the difference in salary for Trade #1. This exception is particularly useful when teams trade draft picks straight-up for a player; since draft picks have no salary value, often the only way to get salaries to match is to use a trade exception, which allows trades to be made despite unbalanced salaries. It is also useful to compensate teams for losing free agents as they can do a sign and trade of that free agent to acquire a trade exception that can be used later. Note this exception is for single player trades only, though additional cash and draft picks can be part of the trade.

And we wonder how Sutter navigates the NHL cap.

He would get absolutely owned if he was a GM in the NBA. No wonder the Rockets hired the guy from MIT.
