See you in the World Cup thread in 2014.

Oh and the EPL and Liverpool threads here coming soon!!!

Agreed, great thread - ended up coming here instead of the soccer board I read during the WC which I never would have thought.

Spain deservedly won. They truly are the best in the world. Xavi, Iniesta, Torres, Villa, Casillas, Pique, Puyol, Ramos, Fabregas, Xabi Alonso... one of the best, if not the best, generations in football...Not just Spanish football. Pure world class team.

I think CBC is right on this one. The audience for the World Cup will be multiple times larger than the Winter Olympics. Today's game was projected to be the most watched show in TV history.

Too bad the ref wanted to make sure he was the star.

Boooooo.

Worst team to win a World Cup.

Won the World Cup scoring 8 goals in 7 games and diving all over the field.

to be fair though, De Jong deserved a red for that UFC style kick to the chest of the spanish player in the first half. He only got a yellow.

I'm glad Spain won, they were my team after France. As for the officiating, the dutch were lucky to not have two reds for that boot to the chest and the brutal tackle from behind in the first half. So they can complain about the yellows, but not justifiably.

A real shame about the reffing in this one. Exciting game, none the less - both goalkeepers came up with some huge stops.

You're kidding right? They may have only scored 8 goals, but they should have scored at least 5 against both the Swiss and Honduras (was it them?). They owned Portugal, should have scored more and controlled the game against Germany who scored 4 goals to Argentina and England each. Even tonight, they could have and should have capitalized on their chances. Don't kid yourself, they ARE the best in the world, don't let their inefficiency fool you.

As for diving? Spain play the best football...by far. For diving, look up Italy.

Meh, both teams had the breaks to get the goals.

The winning goal leaves a bad taste...

a)the second yellow which took out the Dutch central defender was weak...hand was on the shoulder for sure but didn't pull back. He would've been in there to stop that play turning out the way it did

b)30 seconds earlier the attempt at net from the free kick that hit the defender, and was called a goal kick, could've turned out differently. Who knows what the Dutch do on the corner, but regardless, the play down the field doesn't turn out the way it does which leads to the goal if there was a corner at the other ends 30 seconds earlier. Brutal blown call, not sure what the ref was watching there.

c)First attempted pass was clearly offside...and should've been called as the intent of the pass was to go to the guy who was offside. Of course the second pass was fine thanks to the stumbling defender, but technically the play should've been dead after the original offside.

Not a big fan of that diving today, Spanish especially. Tough to blame the refs for the yellows..early he wanted to set tone and make sure the rough play didn't get out of control, but after he set that precendent, he carried on with it. Some cards simplay for mouthing off too.

Should have would have could have what? Inefficient is inefficient.

8 goals in 7 games. 4 1-0 snorefests.
Most boring team to win a world cup by a mile, the previous worst total was 12 I think.

The thing is, they WEREN'T snorefests. Sure, only one goal, but they do play attractive, attacking football. It's not all about the score.
