Jeez, do the rest of you guys dress in animal skins and baggy Lee's jeans?
To the OP, get an idea of male clothing basics. Chinos are your friend. Get a white shirt. You can buy v-neck sweaters anywhere.

We're just both smart-looking, manly men that are out to attract different sexes.

I find there's no way around spending a lot if you want to look good. However, check out places like Harry Rosen and Holt Renfrew when they have a sale. Generally it happens twice a year (once around this time and once around Christmas time). You can usually find stuff for around half price around that time, so you'll still be spending a decent amount of money, but it won't be much more than you would spend at Mexx or Banana Republic. Also, don't be afraid of salesmen. Yes there are a few sleazy ones out there that are just out to make some money, but the vast majority will work with your body type and skin colour and try to work with what you are looking for.
I find a decent pair of dress pants at regular price from one of those places to cost you around $200 to $300 and a decent shirt around $180 to $250. So if you can get it at half price, it makes quite a difference.
I hope that helps.

Yeah, but I'm straight, so... I don't see where you're going with this. It's cool though. There's nothing "gay" or otherwise in dressing with a sense of minimal aesthetic. It just means you can't wear your sweatpants outside of the house.

You realize it's possible to dress in something other than sweatpants, but yet still not dress like a homo, eh?

I think these would qualify and non-straight sweatpants

It doesn't really matter all that much how you dress, just as long as what you wear looks put together. I think location also comes into play.
Chinos and a white shirt is a laughable idea where I live and work... Jeans and plad shirts for all!

It's funny how girls are usually initially attracted to most gay men until they realize they aren't into them. I'm not saying we should all dress in outlandish outfits, however, I think we can all learn something from them.

By all standards, I am a pretty average looking guy, but I do put some care into my appearance. I wear blazers casually. You got to match the pocket square to your shirt. And you get noticed by the right type of women for sure.

Lumber camp? I'm not saying chinos are super fashionable, but are an easy way to get started in dressing well.
