As I understand it, a player can be offside until they touch the ball at which point the play is stopped. If they don't touch it, no problem.
Edit, just looked it up and the rule is - offside only if they "impact the play" so somewhat discretionary by the ref.

yes, awhile back someone posted some interactive offside rule thing, you can be offside as long as you're not involved in the play.
