Default So Long HDMI: New Standard for A/V Uses Ethernet Cables

Probably more than a few years till HDMI dies but the sooner ethernet takes it over the better IMO.

Awesome for people with new homes with ethernet wiring running everywhere already especially the living room.

Will laugh when Monster Cable makes gold plated CAT-5 cables with carbon fibre connectors wrapped in genuine snakeskin leather.

Monster will soon come out with their Premium Ethernet Cables, which deliver a one million percent(!) improvement in image quality, compared to other cables!

Rolling out in 2011? How will that work with current consoles, PCs, DVD/BR players, PVRs etc?

Shhh don't tell anyone that a digital signal can't degrade over cable. I want to make tons of cash off idiots selling over priced Ethernet cables.

What really sucks is that I just bought a fancy HDMI switch to solve my current theatre problems. O well still need it for 2 years before this craziness commences

I am no proponent of pricey (especially monster) cables. But there are lots of examples of instances where digital signals can degrade over cables. One personal example I have was trying to get rid of sparklies on my hdtv introduced by a 50' (not so great) hdmi cable.

So they're proposing data rates in excess of HDMI 1.3/1.4 (i.e. > 10 GBits/sec) along with PoE and 100 mbit ethernet using garden-variety Cat5e/Cat6? What I've seen also indicates you'd still need an HDBaseT-equipped receiver to function as a switch, which is essentially what HDMI does anyway. The primary benefit appears to be rolling your own (potentially long) cables and sticking them in a wall, but aside from projectors, I've rarely seen a setup where the sources are more than a few meters away from the TV. The 100W power transmission is more interesting; operating low-power TVs could be possible with a single cable. That's not useful for most people, but it could be interesting in commercial applications.

I'm struggling to see the practicality too.

I guess you could have one central receiver/server for the whole house, which would be pretty cool. Then you are stuck having to replace all the tvs and a/v receivers in your house though. Maybe some day down the road that would be useful. A solid wireless solution would probably be available by then, you'd think though.

I don't see what this offers that dlna wouldn't though?
