Sometimes vi is fantastic, but when I was in school we were using a dozen or so flavours of Linux and sometimes they had certain quirky implementations that would drive me absolutely insane. I could never keep it straight which OS had which version of Vi so I just swore it off all together unless I was on my own machine.

Overall though, notepad ++ is my favorite GUI editor.
