A pretty big difference in generations, I was just talking to my old manager at lunch and he was saying his 20 yr old stepson doesn't know how to split wood and he was 16 before he learned how to cut the lawn.

You are coming off more and more as a senile old grouch and less and less as a well developed human being.

I really don't care how your father raised you. It is fairly irrelevant to the topic at hand. Although it does show me a little glimpse into the reason you feel the need to have some strange bias towards young people in general. I am not the poster boy for how an entire generation would act, I was simply describing a specific situation that occurred.

To the idea that your friends 20 yr old can't cut wood... Maybe he doesn't see this as a necessary skill for today's society. Do you know how to weave cloth? Well people used to know how to do that, so how come you don't? It may be that he doesn't feel like he needs to know this to get by today. By no means am I saying I agree with this, I am an avid camper and certainly know how to do these things myself. But maybe this kid thinks that knowing how to write code in objective-c is more important than cutting wood...

I didn't get mad at her when she asked me and I acted well mannered as I got up and moved. It just got me thinking as I watched her sit down that it seemed a little strange that I was immediately expected to move simply because she was my elder and a female and that the way she phrased the question made her seem a little rude. I in no way voiced this thought to her or directed any form of disrespect her way. I went onto an anonymous web forum and asked the question.

Your responses have done nothing but prove your ridiculous bias towards "todays youth" and don't you ever tell me to get off your lawn!

Hey look at that, scoring winger now. Moving up in the world bud.

Pinner. You should hop on a plane with CC and head to Toronto and have a stern talk with all the protestors who's parents didn't bring them up right. I'm sure they'd love to hear you extoll the virtues of growing up in the early 1900's when the telegraph was a sporting new form of communication, and women believed in chastity and the dream of one day getting to vote.

Only the bad apple malcontents dreamed of being able to vote. A good wife knows her place. The kitchen.

Well I'm glad you didn't let the lady notice you were mad.

A ridiculous bias towards today's youth or, blown away by the lack of respect shown to a lady of your Moms age/genre.

What could be so wrong with being kind and thoughtful to somebody less capable ?

You guys would really get a laugh seeing me shovel the old widows sidewalk next store, boy am I a looser.

Please explain to me the lack of respect I displayed.

You act as if I denied her request or acted pissed off. I was annoyed at her entitled tone that's all. It isn't as if whenever I get ticked off I act disrespectful. I really think you have me painted as some young punk and refuse to change your opinion even after I describe the respectful way I approached the situation. Or are you faulting me for being caught up in a book and not noticing when someone gets on three stops after me.

You honestly don't see the difference between the OP and shovelling the sidewalk for an old widow?

Back when Anderson was the end of line I used to get on there and sometimes waited for a seat. Then you had people getting on at Southland and making people give up seats for them. Come on... if you want a seat, go back one stop. You shouldn't inconvenience someone else if you're not willing to inconvenience yourself.

[QUOTE=Pinner;2559300]It was a JC Penny catalog and I was 11. LoL

Ask any 45 yr old guy how we were taught our manors when we were kids. We would get slapped up the side of our heads so fast it would make your head spin if we didn't notice that a lady needed our seat. That's a fact and it wasn't necessarily from our parents or Grandparents, any adult was allowed.

I can understand your arguement, but, society sold you a lie.

Society told you that if you were really, really nice to women, hold doors for them, offer your seat, buy them drinks at the bar, listen while they babble on about their problems et al that you would be irresistable to them.

The truth is women see this as begging, and begging is a turn-off.

Women are a lot less like Princess Buttercup and more like Madonna.

Wow, this thread went all sideways. I'd give up a seat, sure. But that's just being polite. I hold doors too. For shame!

Do you really think an old lady asking a young man if she could sit down on the bus is "a sense of entitlement" ?

My mind is blown. What a bunch of self centered losers, I feel sorry for your parents when they become elderly and need your help and compassion. /

Well, she obviously felt entitled to that seat, didn't she? "Entitled" and "entitlement" are strangely similar, don't you think? It's almost like they share the same root word!

Frankly, I think calling a 50 year old lady "old" is extremely insulting. Last I checked "old" was 60+; clearly you are a moustache-twirling villain and an ageist to boot for using such intemperate language.

I'm 44, so my parents are already "elderly". Of course, when I was raised, in the early 80s, in Calgary, none of the morals you allude to were actually enforced; as I recall it was a lot like now (except the video games were primitive); nobody went around smacking people for insufficiently quickly hopping up when seemingly healthy middle-aged women had to stand up on the LRT.

You must have been born in some hick town where the 50s got held over for a few decades; here in the big city "chivalry" is for the rubes and extreme geezers.

[Mod voice] I really think this threadf could do without all the insults. Agree or disagree with people, but there is no need for insults.

I grew up with two sisters and can say without a shadow of a doubt that in a variety of ways they are smarter, stronger, and more capable then i am. To spout out i should be giving up my seat to someone simply because they are women does a disservice to the fact they are just as strong, just as intelligent as you are and should be treated equally, not as children who can't stand for themselves. If you aren't going to stand up for a healthy man, you sure as hell shouldn't be standing up for a healthy women.

I think some of the comments here from the supposedly masculine posters are pretty disgusting. They think they are out protecting these precious fragile women, but in reality it's sexist and chauvinistic behavior. Treat people like people, not like "hey, you have a vagina, i'm surprised you could even figure out what a bus is, much less stand on one."

Give up your seat if someone needs it. Hold open the door if someone is behind you. If you're on a date with a man or a women, offer to pay. Be a good person to everyone, just not women.
Ok this thread is getting out of hand now!

Hey, there is no need for bigotry now. When a woman takes out another woman, a woman has to pay.

I will never give up my seat, be it for the elderly, pregnant or otherwise infirm. Especially if I'm in the priority seating area.
