My office is on the top floor, so I always hammer on the close door button. I'm not getting stuck in an elevator milk run.

I am asking myself this question too. This thread has a few equality loving man-children. Equality does not require the absence of chivalry boys!

Me either, but if I see a woman walking a few paces behind me to get on the elevator, I hold the door for her and let her in first. I am sure the bus seat hogs here would agree that they too do this?

What these people who keep going on about equlialty don't realize is that there isn't any. The womens movement set out to get equality, but it didn't accomplish this, it only got sameness. Men became more like women. Women became more like men. Now we have a soicety where gender lines are blurred and nobody (mostly men) knows how to act. Which is why giving up your seat to a women on a train could be considered "marginlizing her rights" when in reality it's the right and courteous thing to do.

In all seriousness, I took the extreme position I did in this thread in an attempt to highlight what I feel to be a lack of chivalry in this modern age. I do my best to offer my seat to any woman on the bus, I hold the elevator door open for woman and let them on and off first and open the door and hold it for them.
It's nothing to do with equality or lack thereof... For me, it's just the right thing to do.

Now, I'll stop with the extreme posts in this thread

AnyonebutEdmonton I feel sorry for you.

You waited the extra 5-10 minutes just so you didn't have to stand. If she was sick and needed to sit she just as well could have waited for the next train like you did. It sounds like she was also condescending. If she was polite it would have been a kind gesture but it is still your choice.

For a guy with a broken leg no problem, for a guy in wheelchair no problem, for the old people who it's difficult to stand in a moving train no problem. Because I know they appreciate it. For a condescending @#$% not a chance.

If you got a car, take it. So much for trying to do the right thing. If we worked at the same place I would drive you myself.

See this is why I don't take public transit unless I have absolutely no choice. If I'm driving down the road and I see some senior citizen, or a pregnant lady, nobody expects me to stop the car and offer a ride - especially as it wouldn't be viewed as chivalry, but creepery; it ruins the good deed when the intended recipient of it starts hollering for the police.

Although on the off chance I was on transit, and someone peremptorily asked for my seat, I'd just ask "Why?", if it wasn't obvious. If you can't be bothered to be polite when asking, I see no need to be polite in responding, and if you have no real reason other than a sense of entitlement, you can damn well stand.

I avoid transit due to the excruciating moral and existential quandaries threads like this thrust upon me. It’s not something I can handle first thing in the morning.

This is why I always stand. Also, being pretty tall I can barely fit in the seats.

There Are two extreme variations of opinion here and I kind of stand in the middle. I would have given my seat up if asked too but in the back of my mind I would have wondered why she needed it more than I.

I constantly hold doors for women and men because I think it's polite. I was brought up that way but by no means claim to be the man of the century for it lol. Some women would be extremely offended if you tried to offer your seat to them. My boss is o e for example...an extreme feminist. Her response would be along the lines of why...am I too weak to stand jerk? Something along those lines anyway haha.

You just never know. I'll continue to probably give up my seat and hold doors but that still won't make me question the manhood of the 10 other guys that didn't. Back to the Staal thread I guess. God I'm bored.
