You can probably still download the GM from the WWDC from somewhere. The final version is exactly the same. Although, I'd be concerned about why it's taking so long to download.

That would be helpful if I knew what a) GM and/or b) WWDC were...
Trying to do it though iTunes.

Not all of it... didn't even realize there was an update out today until about 4PM, but I was locked out of doing the update from my home computer... then had to spend an hour or so to update iTunes.
*sigh*

Alright, this is a joke. My 3G doesn't even work on 4.0. Can't type without it freezing for seconds at a time, and it doesn't even have any of the 4.0 features. It looks like multitasking is a joke too.
Fail, Apple.
Can I even go back to 3.1.3?

I'm sticking with iTunes 9.1 so as to stick with jailbroken 3.1.3 on my 3GS. I'd just like to say though that I'm somewhat surprised that Engadget has called i4 the best smartphone on the market. That is definitely gonna bring the haters. I might have to consider buying this phone.

Oh hey, there we go. I figured out how to change the name of people in Thanks lists. Can't remove them, but I can rename them.

The 3G has a paltry 128MB of RAM, and a wimpy processor. It's performance hasn't been the same since 3.0 came out.
I'm about ready to toss it out in favour of the iPhone 4, but I haven't bought a phone since the 2G came out.

Either way 4.0 isn't supposed to freeze the 3G to the point that it's unusable. The opposite, in fact.

For those having issues with the 3G + iOS4, I suggest a RESTORE to iOS4, not an UPDATE. Just do a restore, then manually return your media through a sync. my lady's 3G, jailbroken, on the public release of iOS4 is running slightly (I'd say ~10%) faster than jailbroken 3.1.3
Edit: Hers is running fine even with multitasking enabled.

Yeah, I haven't heard much about the freezing thing. I know a guy at work who has a 3G and his was ok today. He's pissed about missing some features, etc, but so is everyone else. His phone works fine though.
There might be some horror stories on line or whatever. I have no clue though, I haven't really read much about any of it.

I updated with the GM seed from Xcode, but I haven't had freezing issues with the public release.

Ok. my disdain for the iOS4 multitasking may have been a bit premature. I was under the impression that the multitasking would just "work" with all apps. After I posted I learned that the developers have to code the ability into the apps themselves. I still wish I had the option to choose to close an app or have it mutitasked. Something like click to multitask and hold for 1 or 2 seconds and then let go to close would be ideal. I still think that the backgrounder method of putting a small icon on the app that is multitasked is a good idea. I don't want to have to pull up a "taskbar" to see what is running in the background. Actually scratch that... The biggest thing is that apps that are not currently programmed for multitasking are showing up in the taskbar, even though they start from scratch when I select them. It should be a given that apps that are not programmed to be multitasked should not be in the taskbar.

The freezing is probably your phone, not the software. No issues here.

My friend just updated his 3G and said nothing can access the internet on his phone. When he connects it to itunes it asks him to download the carrier update, which he does, but doesn't look like it's doing anything.
Anyone have an suggestions?
Thanks

reset network settings?
restore from the back up that was created during the 4.0 update?
