pretty much an ignorant comment. It's like you think leashing a child means putting collar around the neck.... It's just a backpack the kid wears which basically has a tether.
If you take your kids to the mall or wherever, at some point they will be tired of being carried or being in a stroller/wagon or whatever. They just want to get out and run. The leash backpack just allows his/her running to be somewhat controlled and can be a life saver. You can't always have your eyes on your little one and any parent who says they can - well then you should go talk to Chris Angel cause you'd be a magician.

No? You find nothing cruel tying your kid to a leash and then walking him down the street like a dog?

Hmm that's sad though. Me, I walked by, frowned, said a little prayer. The cop looked at me, we both shook out heads.. that was enough.

Have you ever heard the term if you ignore them they will go away? Give it a shot instead of bringing it up.
This is very tragic, for everyone involved not just the Mother. I couldn't imagine standing front row for something like that. This was my #1 fear of having kids was something like this happening.

See the posts above. I don't think you know what the child leashes actually look like.
EDIT: cruel and unusual indeed.

Exactly. Especially if you are trying to hold on to more than one at a time. Often have to count on some sense of self preservation in my 4 year old, when I have him and his 2 year old brother out some where.
Leashes are not the answer, imo, I'd assume you'd just make your child even more clueless about running into traffic or what not when he inevitably is without one.
You can't 100% protect your kids, and I'd be surprised if leashed children were statistically any less likely to die than free roaming kids. How many kids have died this way in Calgary over the life of the Ctrain? I'd guess they are about 100x more likely to die every time they get in a car vs every time they are out without a leash.

If I was a parent and going to the mall with my kid(s), I'd go there for reasonable amount of time. That means get what I need and be out of there as soon as possible. Or I wouldn't take them at all. But that's just me.

I can't believe how horrible and horrifying this is for everyone involved. My condolences to the family of the child.
I really hate stories like this. Senseless.

You know, I try not to pull out this card, but this is definitely a case where people who don't have kids shouldn't speak up about the topic, because there are so many things that you just don't know about when you don't have kids. My son absolutely loved his 'leash' when he had it ... doesn't really use it very much any more because he is very agreeable to holding hands while walking.
I would never, ever judge a parent who decided that one of these items would be a good idea for their family. To this day my son still giggles and gives his monkey backpack a hug when he sees it.

Actually I do, and I still stand by my opinion. Either hold your kid's hand or don't take them with you. Although, to be fair, I'm not a parent yet so...but still I'm really not a fan of these leashes.

So you are not a parent. Then i'm sorry, you do not have the credentials to have an opinion. Once you have a frame of reference then feel free to check back in.
(Sorry if this is a little harsh but I used to be ignorant of parenthood as well and now i know.)

Couldn't move, type or even talk for a 15 minutes after reading this. That poor mother, I just pray that eventually she could move on from something so horrific like this. \
I may be in the minority here but for a thread this fresh and for such a horrific accident, could we maybe stay away from minor subplot arguments, like peoples views on leashes. Let people be able to read others thoughts and any more information on what happened then just page after page of skimming through leash arguments.

I used to think that too until I got sick of my son not wanting to hold my hand and him whining, pulling and crying about it when we went somewhere - this option gives both parties what they want. Security for me - perceived freedom for him. It's not like I would yank on it and yell 'heel' when he started to get to the end of the leash.

Ok fair enough. I would never judge or call someone a bad parent because they're using a leash. I'm just saying I personally would not use it, and if I was a kid, I also wouldn't want on me.
Anyway, on topic though, horrible accident. Wouldn't wish on anyone, no parent should bury their child, especially a three year old. My condolonces.

What more info could there really be, though? Besides more people saying "that's awful", I'm just not sure what else could be discussed about this.

Like I said in my previous post, fair enough. I see your point, and definately agree with your. Kids can be a handful, especially between the ages 3-5 where they're really curious... But, again, I'm not a fan, I think my child would be safest with me holding his/her hand.

Justanotherguy PM'd me and told me to stop making jokes
I guess he took my comment of "anyone else have onions for lunch" the wrong way.
I was obviously inferring, well I guess not so obvious to some people that this story actually made me tear up.
