Cannavaro with an atrocious blunder on the FK allowing NZ to score. Only a few minutes in.

Although far from over this has to be one of the stranger WC tourneys I can remember.

Hopefully the Kiwi's can keep the Italians at bay.

Italy back to their whining diving ways....so frustrating to watch them give ammo to the ######s who use it to justify their soccer bashing.

Unfortunately frequent diving is part of the game. Not sure if you guys have watched many games but there have been very few dives in the first 30 minutes of the NZ-ITA game.

It definitely looked like a foul on De Rossi but I think he took a dive just to ensure a call.

I didn't see any whining when NZ scored their clearly offside goal... Did you? The NZ player was holding the shirt when De Rossi went down. Thats a foul. The ref should award a penalty kick. Don't kid yourself.

Clearly offside? Maybe a different angle shows it, but on ESPN it looked like it went off the defender.

Btw, I was talking about Chiellini repeatedly slapping the pitch like a little baby, then bouncing back up a-ok. The penalty kick was a foul....even if the italian helped it out a bit.

I think that would depend on how you would define "dive". The Italians have embellished pretty much all contact to the point of absurdity. The few elbows that were taken were hardly worthy of the result. The Canvarro (sp?) 'winded' episode was a tap. de Rossi was held and it would have been a 50/50 call (that marginal holding happens all the time) that I could have agreed with without too much debate - until the pathetic dive at the end.

I think somebody should come in studs showing on de Rossi and show him (and the rest of the Italians) what a real foul is.

I do find some humour in the perception that certain teams dive so much more than others. I find some African countries tend to play a tougher brand of football but generally diving is rampant at the World Cup. I would be willing to bet that most viewers who find that Italy simulate more than anyone else is just looking for an excuse to dislike the reigning world cup holders.

Name a top team that doesn't embellish every tap. I have watched almost every game so far this tourney and 95% of fouls are embellished. In fact a good portion of fouls aren't even fouls.

However that is the game of football. Like it or not that is just how the game is played.

One thing that does bother me about the Italians is that they do seem to whine a lot. If a call doesn't go their way they'll stand around and yell at the official instead of carrying on with the play.

I am still not sure it made contact with the Kiwi in the box even after a bunch of slow motion replays. If it did not, he was clearly onside. If it did, he was fractionally offside.

It went off a NZ player then Canavaro. The player was in a offside position when it went off the NZ player.

Chiellini was hit in the face with a elbow. This was clearly displayed on the replay. He seemed to miraculously recover. But don't you watch soccer? I see this happen nearly every game in every league. Ronoldo from Madrid is by far the worst for this. This is by no means an "Italian" thing.

Well, yeah, it's sadly all too common in football, but over the years the Italans seem to excel at it more than others (the other Souther/Mediterranean countries aren't far behind). Serie A is almost unwatchable because of it.

I just hate seeing it on any level, as you just know all the soccer haters will use it against the game. Ronaldo makes my blood boil.

Not really diving on the Italians part because the elbows and fouls were there, but a lot of the play acting after the fouls. I am Italian and have to say the rolling around on the ground, clutching the face is terrible today.

First goal was offside from the flick on (really that goal is all Cannavaro sucking), but the soft penalty call (which is still a penalty just not always called) kinda levels it out a little bit.

Should be a good game in the second half, Italy seemed to wake up in the last 20 and know they need to win, preferably by 2+, to keep pace with Paraguay.

I find the South Americans are the worst. Ie Silva from Arsenal against Rangers (I think). Other then that and the fact I believe it is also a common problem in the EPL (not as common as the Serie A and La Liga). I think you are spot on.

Quick question: I've been watching most of the games at work and don't usually watch any of the pre/half-time/post game stuff on CBC. Is it always this bad?

I've really enjoyed the coverage by the Score. They have at least a few hours a night devoted to highlights, previews and analysis and 1000x better than this CBC stuff.

NZL really need to stop swinging their elbows on every ariel ball. Absolutely ridiculous when they clocked Zambrotta in the face with an elbow and then became all indignant like it wasn't a foul.

Thumbs down

I am a soccer fan, I don't care if other bash it but...holy cow what a pathetic dive! Clearly when someone grabs your shirt the physics dictate you fall down arms over your head screaming at the top of your lungs... What a disgrace to the game.

C'mon Kiwis!

Clutching the jersey is something that needs to stop. If you've ever played striker and missed a ball because a defenseman had a fist full of your shirt, then you know what I am talking about.
