Sure would of looked nice alongside the Grand Theatre, as well as the HBC building and that old church which are lucky enough to still stand. Edit: Sorry. For those that don't know, this was the Calgary Herald building.

The building across the street (white cladding) to the west was equally nice IIRC and was re-clad in the 70s.

The dam and water treatment plant were built in 1933, so that photo was 17 years after it was built. Considering the lack of any development around it in 1950, it must have been in the middle of nowhere when it was built.

Just found this funny, although probably not PC enough these days, especially for the Stampede board to get included into a parade.

I don't think so, there used to be a Bob's too, Peter's Brother.

4th St. NW Mcdonalds around 23 ave used to be an original design, a very old and weird building.

Holy shiet, this city has just exploded in growth in a matter of 50 years hasn't it? Makes me wonder how much further this city will be in 20-30 years.

I swear I remember it being just across the street where the Mr. Lube is, with a north facing building, opposed to how it faces east today. Does anyone else think so too?

I don't get why some of you hate on McMahon. It is easily as good as a couple of college football stadiums I've been too in the US. Commonwealth may have a wider concourse, but at McMahon you have a much better sightline as the stands are closer to the field as we do not have a running track. McMahon is also much better than CFL stadiums in Regina, Winnipeg, Hamilton and Montreal.

Over the last 60 years, the first 30 of those years saw extremely explosive growth. From a city the size of Regina to a city the size of Winnipeg. The population in 1981 was over 4.5 times what it was in 1951 (which helps explain why the Corral was a perfectly acceptable arena for this city when it was built in the early 50s).

By comparison, the last 30 years have been relatively calm, not quite doubling what the population was in 1981.

In 30 years, I'd expect the population to be in the 1.6-1.8 million range, with the boundaries expanded accordingly, but probably not significantly further than where they are today.

Here's a good illustration of how "built-out" the city was in 2005: http://content.calgary.ca/CCA/City+H...of+Calgary.htm There are still a lot of undeveloped gaps in there.

^^^ Good map but needs updating. The city annexed more land in 2007 so the boundaries are actually different. Also there is a lot of land developed that is not showing on the map. Example Auburn bay, Cranston, New Brighton etc

On another note, I just noticed the airport was actually built outside of Calgary.
