Taht's XBOX 360 for ya. Those games are going to look so real now with this console. After seeing MAdden 2006 preview for it, I thought I was watching a live game.
Unreal what this technology has grown to.

Gotta love Pixel Shaders
That being said, if you think Console games are going to look good, the next round of PC games are going to blow you out of the water.

I'm not really planning on getting a next gen system at this point...but if I see a hockey game that looks like that, it'll be pretty tough to resist

... And the PS3 will look even better.
Very exciting times for video games, in terms of visuals.
Unfortunately, both of these next gen machines are built for graphics, and do not provide the same sort of evolutionary processing support for things like AI. So while graphics will improve, don't look for computer AI to improve drastically in this generation. (at least, not with these 2 boxes)

For sure, the graphics look amazing, and the PS3 will use OpenGL 2.0 correct Soul?
How long do you think untill there is a dedicated processing unit for AI and physics?
All the pretty graphics in the world will not keep a person happy if game does not provide a challenge for the user.

I'll pass on the Xbox 360. I think PS3 will definetly be worth the wait.

"How can it look this real?"
The question that has been asked over the past 10 years for video games. I'm sure in 5 years we will laugh at these graphics.
But ya.. looks sweet.

Check out the videos for Call of Cuty for the 360...incredible. I might pre-order mine today.

Call of Cutie.. sounds like an awesome game! :P
The new Call of Duty game comes out for the PC soon, I can't wait. It's the only game I've played on the computer is sometime.. I think Sim City 2 might have been the last.

Maybe I am wrong on this, but I always thought that AI was a software/design bottle neck not a hardware bottleneck.

Well there already is a physics chip which has been developed by a company called Agia or something.
I've read that Sony said they'll be using this chip in the PS3,
I also have yet to read anywhere that can accurately say which will be better. However one will be more difficult to develop for than the other.
Until both consoles are realeased and everyone know what the final shipping unit will contain and what the games look like (and not just developed movies, which a lot of these "preview videos" and "screenshots" are) any comments on which machine is more awesome is just fanboyism

You guys realize that these sorts of graphics are already available for the PC. This is nothing special. Sports games are the easiest to make look good. Shaders on low-poly human models with some photo textures can make anything look real.

exactly, the next gen consoles are pretty much catching up to high end computers. The next batch of ps graphics are going to make these look babyish.

The thread title reminds me of the High Heat Baseball 2001 ads on tv with Sammy Sosa saying "But it's so reeeeeeeeeeal?!".

That's sometime the case, but in the case of the PS3 and XBox360, the design of the processors are very specifically geared towards linear operations that work well for things like graphics, but don't lend themselves very well to branching code that is used for things like game logic, AI, etc..
Not saying those things won't exist or won't continue to improve, but doing so will require a lot of effort on the part of developers to come up with different ways to do things.. Which is required anyway really since the processors in both the PS3 and XBox360 are very different than previous generations.
If you are really interested, there are some excellent articles on the processor design for both boxes at http://arstechnica.com (though they are very detailed).

Actually it's only the SDK (the software) that Sony has licensed to use with the PS3.. they won't include the chip.

From what I've seen all of the XBox 360 previews have WAY better graphics than the PS3 ones, or is the best from the PS3 yet to come?
