Both good matches this morning. Somehow I managed to watch some of the Chile game after having only three hours sleep. Fell asleep a few times but saw the goal and some great play from Chile. They looked very impressive to me.
The Spanish game. Wow. I thought that Spain looked very good early doors but as the game went on and the Swiss held the line you just felt that an upset was on the cards. Weird goal but a highly entertaining one at that. That was a true nailbiter to the bitter end and, funnily enough, I was pulling for Switzerland. (That surprised me.) I guess old habits die hard and club team affinities matter less that I thought on the world stage. Sorry Fernando and Pepe.
So everyone has played once and the tournament is finally alive.
If South Africa can pull out a win this evening then the tournament will really take off!

All tongue in cheek. Reilly is great. Though i am sure this will upset the die-hards.
Let's not go crazy here. This is the same guy who shouted 'It's a bad night to be an atheist' when Josh Hamilton came in second during the '08 Home Run Derby.
I love the World Cup, in some ways its just like the Stanley Cup Playoffs, all of a sudden Spain are chumps are Germany are now the favourites to win it all.
What a twist!!

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

That's why round/robin knock-out touranments don't necessarily tell us who the best team is. You would need a larger schedule where everyone plays each other twice. That is not practical.

Of course not, that would take 2 months. The players are already over-played as it is, which is evident from the ridiculous number of injuries we're seeing.
But its also part of the fun, anything can happen, including the European champions losing to relative minnows.

So what?
he simply is one of the best sports writers and humorists in North America.
It's starting to look like the short pass offensive game (more or less aŽla Barcelona) is
a) extremely popular right now among the major powers in football
b) extremely ineffective, propably due to every defensive team coming to the tournament well prepared against it.
It'll be interesting to see how the tactics develop during the tournament.
