Default What gym do you go to?

I'm exploring the thought of joining a gym, again. I used to be with Gold's Gym at Northland, but since we had our little son 2.5 years ago, things kind of stopped.

It was an ok Gym, but I found that the maintenance/equipment was not always up to par. Is this normal for gyms?

I know location (I'm in the NW) and the distance plays a big part, but I was more wondering if there are any favorite franchises or small mom and pop operations that people can suggest or recommend to stay clear of.

Not looking for anything special, just something decent at a fair price.

These are the ones I know in my area.

Gold's Gym - Northland
Anytime Fitness - Kincora/Evanston
Goodlife Fitness - Beacon Hill
The Y at Crowfoot

I recently joined Club Fit (formerly World Health Club) and so far they've been pretty good. I work out downtown, but they do have a location in Edgemont as well.

I have been a member at WHC (Bay building and North Hill mall location)

I am now a member of ECY - love the gym, dont love the price. Not sure if this is important to you or not, if you are a member at the Y that is good at every Y in the province (Calgary, Edmonton, etc) the only restriction is mens + which is restricted based on what gym you are a + member at.

So if you live in NW and work downtown you could utilize both Y with same basic membership fee.

Crowfoot Y: Too many fataing people. Extremely busy. Not enough equipment. Expensive membership but can quit anytime. Equipment is okay but not enough Precor cardio stuff. It's clean though. Hours are much less than GG.

World Gym here in Saskatoon, but I think they have a location in Calgary?

I've been really impressed with the way it is run here..

GoodLife in Canyon Meadows in SE Calgary. Good gym, never too busy and lotsa hotties. I pay $41.99 a month including GST and I have access to all the aerobics/pilates/yoga/RPM classes I want. The fact that it's Canadian is one of the main reasons I went to it.

WHC for me.

Thought about a switch to Good Life, but not enough locations for my liking.

Check out Fitness NW in Silver Springs. Its a small gym, nothing like the big ones, is very affordable and has all the equipment you could need.

I used to go here, it's actually very nice other than the limited hours.

Mount Royal University is fantastic. It's huge, clean and up to date. Parking is $10 a month.

U of C and WHC Downtown Bay during school time. Also use the Sunridge facility during summer.

Goodlife. The main reasons I chose it were:

Proximity to my house (2 locations within 10 minutes). The childcare they offer is pretty decent - good price, clean facilities, though sometimes a little overcrowded for my liking, which is why I say "decent". Also, the fitness classes are really good (Les Mills programs) and the Women's Only areas have lots of good equipment and are quite large.

Gold's in Mackenzie.

Some of the cardio equipment keeps having trouble with its T.V.'s. The pool is always going under maintenance.

But they have a good range of equipment and I rarely have wait.

I don't care about the cost as the company pays for it.

I did look at that place and it's pretty sweet, too bad it's at the other side of the city from me. I am looking forward to the new sports complex being finished at COP, but until then I'll check other opportunities.

Thanks

Avoid WHC at all costs, particuliarly the North Hill location. I don't really want to get into all the reasons why on this board but it's going down hill fast. I recently quit my WHC membership and have joined Anytime Fitness downtown and it's awesome. I would highly recommend you join, or at least tryout the Anytime in the NW. The gyms are small, clean, well kept and the staff are great. Not only that, but you can't beat the hours....any time.

I should also mention that I tried out about 6 or 7 different gyms before I settled on Anytime and have not second guessed my decision for a second.
