I am very interested to see if that problem has been fixed. Most new Elites do not RROD very often... but this is a big change to the hardware.

Whew. It's probably just a mistake on Best Buy's end. The 250GB slim PS3s are $349, so $399 for an Xbox doesn't make any sense at all.

Can someone explain the appeal behind this?
I mean it does look better, have the internal wireless, but who that owns a xbox is going to go buy this just because of these new things?

I bought my xbox less than a year ago. Not sure on the HD size (it's up there though), but it did come with an external wi-fi connector, and Halo 3. Can't remember the price I paid off the top of my head though.
Obviously if my xbox breaks I will buy one of these, but I would have bought the old one too, so I don't see how MS is going to make any extra money off these, especially considering the costs to design, manufacture, etc. these.

Harddrive will be bigger than any previous Xbox, has built in toslink out.

MS will make more money off this than the old Xbox. That's why Sony always releases slim versions of their consoles after a few years. Small size = fewer materials. Re-design = better cooling and less RROD and fewer warranty claims. In that same vein, we likely have die shrinkages as well which also means reduced cost. It seems to run contrary to common sense, but for electronics and games consoles, getting smaller = more profit due to refinements in technology and the use of cheaper and fewer materials. It has always been this way, even back to the original Atari.

They're not trying to sell these to people who already have a 360... they're trying to make the product just a little bit more appealing to people who don't have one. And even if it doesn't have big impact on sales, it's not like its something that would have cost a lot to implement. Its the same reason cars get minor improvements every year, it's not to sell the person who got a 2010 the 2011 model.

If you don't want to pay you can copy using Flash drives (8 gigs at a time) or redownload online.

It's an incremental improvement for sure, but the xbox platform doesn't need to be torn down and started from scratch. For now we can build on it with better processors, hard drives, cooling and form factor.

MS will make money the same way that Apple made money going from the iPhone 3G to the 3GS.

I don't own any game consoles right now (iPod touch is the closest it gets lol), but seeing as Kinect launches in November, I'll be hinting strongly for a birthday present.

So if they're discontinuing the older models, what happens if my older model RRODs? Do I get a slim as a replacement? I'm coming up on the 3-year mark on my arcade, and if this is the case, I might move my xbox out of the open and into a hotter area to try to "encourage" it to RROD lol

It would suck if your "encouragement" caused it to RROD right after the warranty expires.

Problem is they probably have millions of the old models in stock so it's unlikely you'll get a slim.

I am almost positive they will not discontinue the arcade. Why would they eliminate their cheap version? That would be a colossus mistake.

I actually bought one a few years ago and never ran into the problem. It's the HDMI version, they seem pretty solid now.

Yah, I believe they would replace your console with a refurbished one anyway, so you would get someone else's fixed RROD console.
