I have played soccer for most of my life, and I bet that the majority of players don't know that part of the offside rule. More than 99% of the time you can simply say "last defender" and be correct, and the only time you'd be wrong is in a situation like that one, or if the keeper is playing up in the late stages of a game.

I haven't played formally organized soccer since I was 10, and yet I know that rule. Weird. Maybe I play too much FIFA.
