I would argue the 21312nd guy would care. I mean, he climbed freaking everest.
The attitudes that are starting to come out through some posters is "don't do anything hard unless you know for a fact that you're going to get tonnes of recognition and accolades from everyone around you. Self-satisfaction means eff-all. Everyone has to like you and worship you for anything you do, else its not worth doing."

Hopefully this does not end in tragedy. She knew enough to know when she was hooped by manually activating the distress beacons, so hopefully she can just hold on until they get her out.

Although I do agree with what you are trying to say, this situation is different, I do think it is highly irresponsible for parents to put their children in what could turn into a life or death situation, and this situation is just that. When it comes down to it this is a pointless way to get your 15 minutes, she will be forgotten before long and be nothing but a Wikipedia entry

What other purpose does attempting a world record do?
I am sure there are other short term benefits...but there are other ways to achieve those without risking your life.

She wants to do it and it was her, along with her parents, decision. You shouldn't let it bother you so much. She places value in it, you don't.
It IS quite an accomplishment, whether you want to admit it or not.

No kidding.
It is so disturbing to me all of a sudden that in the space of one thread some posters have chosen to show colors of true apathy and then jealousy. Its like every last achievment by someone other than themselves is some attention grab for their precious 15mins of fame, and it seems the bigger the achievement, the worse the redicule.
If everyone in the world behaved like this, we would be still be living in caves.
1: Hey Lug, you working on that stupid piece of crap again?
2: Oh what, this thing? Its called a wheel, check it out, it makes everything infinately easier!
1: Eff that man. Nobody gives a crap about your stupid wheel, so why bother wasting time on it? You think you're better than everyone else or something? Like you give a crap about anything other than people stroking your ego.

You don't know that. Neither do I. Which is why I never alluded to it. She is 16, it is still irresponsible for her parents to allow her to do something like that.
And it is quite an accomplishment.
There is a great show on i think Discovery about two guy who sailed the Atlantic in a race.....It really opened my eyes to the shear mental torture that those two went through...It must much harder doing it along and at a young age, no doubt an accomplishment.

Yikes. The difference between you and me is that I believe that a child should not be put in a life or death situation, you do. ridiculing someone for a perfectly acceptable is curious.
Let's hope she is ok.
And you example is not an accomplishment of a life or death situation

That's just the point. If you're doing it for yourself, you don't need to be the youngest person to do it. That's just glory-seeking. You should be able to get enough self-satisfaction at doing it at, say 21, rather than doing it early and putting yourself in a situation that you aren't prepared for.

Really, he doesn't know that the girl wanted to do it?
Dude it's damn near impossible to get a 16 yr old girl to do ANYTHING she doesn't want to do, let alone sail around the world.

It doesn't sound like there was much of a safety net for this girl. If I had a 16 year old daughter that wanted to sail around the world solo, you can bet that I'd be just out of sight of her in my own boat.

I would argue that no amount of preperation can truly prepare you for a challenge like that. If she wants to be the youngest to do it and has the training then all the power to her. Lots of growth can come from this experience, especially for a young'in like her that none of her peers will ever be able to comprehend or understand.

Nah, pretty much the waves slapped me away and I ended up on a deserted island.

1: Hey Lug, you still working on that stupid piece of crap?
2: Oh this, its called a boat! Remember how wood floats on water? Well by tieing lots of wood together we can move ourselves and our things across bodies of water!
1: Why the hell would we want to do that? Carrying stuff with your arms isn't good enough for you? Trying to make us all look stupid?
2: No, just imagine the extra stuff we can move, and so much more quickly than pulling it through the forest! With less damage!
1: Oh yeah, so what happens when that thing tips over? Not only do you lose the cargo, but now you're in a river with alligators and snakes and poison fish! Look man, quit wasting all your energy on these stupid things and maybe think about helping us kill stuff instead?
