Why don't they alternate?
Are there any other states/provinces that have 7 digits that don't alternate? I think Ontario is the other way around. 4 letters and 3 numbers.

They should tie them into peoples cell phone #'s. That way when I curse at you for being an idiot driver you actually hear what I have to say.
Edit: More than likely I would just creep on hot looking chicks though. haha

That is 8 digits: 3 letters, dash, 4 numbers.
I wonder if they'll change the rules for personalized plates now to allow 8 digit combos?

Yeah, that would have made more sense to me as well.
Now with simply adding an extra digit and keeping the letters first they are going to run into a lot of confusion with existing plate numbers. If someone currently has ABC-111 and someone new gets ABC-1111 - wouldn't that be easier to have mistaken identity?
Why not go to an entirely new format to avoid any overlap or confusion? Adopt a California type format and that way we'll never have to redo the format again.

But there is no shortage of fiery opinions -- especially when it comes to the controversial idea of front licence plates.
Drivers in the province -- 80 per cent according to a government survey -- are overwhelmingly opposed to them and the province has no plans to reintroduce them.

Damn. I like the idea of front plates.

i believe ontario has 8 digit plates
with a 6 digit plate, there should be a possible combo of over 2 billion plates.
with 7, there are over 78 billion.
with 8, it goes to over 2.8 trillion
this is based on 25 letters*, 10 numbers, and possible space(s) = 36 characters. (*letter 0 and zero, being the same)
....unless my math is way off

You hit that on the head actually. I don't really care for cars. I value the ability to park facing-out in a transit parking lot more than the look of my car.

Well it depends on how you did your math.
If you're looking at the currnet format of LLL-###
then there are only 26^3 * 10^3 combos availalbe or ~ 17.5 million. And that's without excluding things they wouldn't allow like "sex" or "fuk" etc.
But yeah, if you just assumed there was no format and you could have any letter or number in any spot then you'd be in the 2 billion range.

Lots of people don't reuse their license plate when they change vehicles.
