Thumbs up TJ Brodie Update

Another defender update. This time I asked Brock Otten some questions about TJ Brodie, whom I consider a pretty strong prospect despite the fact he was drafted in the 4th round. Here's one answer that really stands out:

Brodie is now a very capable two way defender. In Barrie, he actually took on more of a "defensive" role, thus the decreased offensive production after transferring to a better team. He's learned to use his mobility defensively and is solid in defending off the rush. He anticipates the play really well too and gets his stick in passing lanes. The best thing about Brodie's defensive play is how quickly he can turn a defensive struggle into an offensive breakout.

I'm looking forward to seeing Brodie in Abbotsford next year.

That play by Brodie looks alot like the Erixon play in the other thread, just a nice pass instead of scoring himself.

They are both very mobile, that's for sure.

Brodie is an amazingly smooth skater.

So with Erixon and Brodie, we now have some mobile moving defenseman. Couple together Gio and Bouw who both move extremely well. With White and Regehr, we could have a very very solid blue line.

Seabrook is a very mobile defenseman as well, and from what I understand didn't have too bad of a rookie campaign in Abby last year.

It's too bad Negrin was hurt for much of last season. He's a nice skating defenceman as well. Brodie, Erixon, Seabrook, and Negrin all have a bright future.

If Brodie turns out into a 3-4 dman then I think that would make that boston trade a pretty good one.

We have a few defenders worth getting excited about.

Something to balance the doom and gloom I suppose.

Yeah, that old codger Darryl Sutter who hates players with skill that can skate, looks to be picking a few guys on the backend who have some skill and mobility. Should be interesting to see what the Flames defence looks like to start the 2012 season.

I think the Flames changed their draft strategy around 2007. I don't know if there was a concurrent shifting of personnel in the scouting department or not, but the choosing of guys like Brodie and even Erixon stands in pretty sharp contrast to, say, the Flames 2005 draft which I recently reviewed for HF. Matt Pelech, Gord Baldwin and Myles Rumsey were all taken that year. The Flames drafted more "big, shut-down" type defenders than forwards of any stripe that summer (and they had 8 picks).

I wouldn't mind if we traded a couple of our defencemen prospects for a couple of forwards prospects. Use our organizational strength to address our weakness. Also, White (if he signs), Gio and Bouwmeester are all relatively young, our future in D is bright to say the least so we can afford to trade one or two.

Well it wouldn't even have to be a change in strategy if they merely decided back then that we were bare on defensive defensemen (we had Giordano/Phaneuf at that point I think) and then in later drafts decided we were thinner on puck moving or all around guys because of having guys like Pelech and Baldwin already. We did take a 6'6 defensemen after that didn't we?

I think sometimes it looks like we're flipflopping philosophy when we're merely drafting to fill weak areas.

Whoever the scout is that scouts for defensemen, and in particular, the OHL, he has been earning his paycheck over the past few years. He is definitely bringing up the average.
