Joining the Army
Recently I have seriously been considering joining the Canadian Forces, specifically the infantry. I won't bore everybody with the background but if anyone is currently in the Armed Forces, I have some questions that haven't seemed to be able to answer through their website.
I know some here have been there in the past and some are in the Reserves so maybe you guys can answer my questions as well. Maybe just respond to this thread if you think you can help me and I'll fire off a PM or something.
Thanks.

I know I'm not Canadian but thank you! Young men such as yourself make your country and freedom in general so much better!
Thank you!

You can ask, but my experience is from the early 90's so I don't think its that current.

You can try signing up at AirsoftCanada.com; lots of milsim guys there that are actually enlisted. Either way, God be with you and thanks for at least the consideration of serving our proud country.

Not being in the military myself but have had many friends and family speak very highly of their experience (except for my nephew who got kind of f'uked in afghanistan)
My best friend growing up joined the army at 17 years old (believe it or not back then a judge told him "army or reform school" ) he ended up teaching mountain climbing to the special forces (USA included) retired with pension at 46 and now makes (guessing) about 300k a year part time teaching his skills to special ops (mostly snipers) all around the world.
His skills are to climb a mountain and blend in...never to be seen.

I'd shoot you but it takes a minute to load my musket, and if your more then 10 feet away, I'll probably miss.
So I extend you this middle finger as a sign of friendship.

It's pretty tough to get into the Infantry right now. Like really tough. The reg force ranks are full last I heard. They have closed recruiting to infantry.
If you notice the commercials they are running now are for artillery, navy and support people like mechanics and weapons technicians. Those are the people they really need.
Same with the reserves, i'm pretty sure the Highlanders are basically at capacity.
I was in from 2003 to 2007, so my knowledge may be a bit dated, but I will still help if I can. There are a couple people on the forum who are current serving members of the CF.

THIS IS JUST MY OPINION. Good for you on doing something for your country if your young and single BUT I do not understand why married people leave their spouse and children. IMO, youyr family is #1 priority and leaving them is not cool.

Go into the Airforce. They are always looking for mechanics and it is a great job. Better pay than infantry, less time in tents, better job prospects after military life. Did it for 11 years and have been at it as a civie for 10 more. They teach you everything you need to know, so as long as you can pass the aptitude tests you'll do fine.

It breaks my heart when I see pictures in the news paper of young kids crying at their fathers funeral who were killed in Afghanistan.
If you really want to see something sad, watch the documentary Section 60 (I saw it on HBO). Section 60 is the section of Arlington National Cemetery where servicemen from Afghanistan and Iraq are being buried. Scenes of young widows with toddlers sitting on their laps being presented the flag from their husbands coffin will rip your heart out.

I gave serious thought to joining the military after high school... instead I decided to try University first and I stayed there.
I always have wondered what it would have been like though to go through training. My Nephew is in the Navy and he absolutely loves it.

Infantry was my last choice when I was selecting a service.
I didn't want to hike all the time, and I didn't want to get pushed out of plane. (Plus stepping on a anti-personnel mine would suck)
So Armour corps for me!

Surely your regiment was issued Martini Henry's upon shipping to South Africa?

Yet that is a sacrifice so many make.
I wouldn't like it either, but I'm not going to say somebody shouldn't do it.

I don't have the balls to do it and if there was a draft I'd probably sneak my ass to Mexico, so I thank you for your service!

Fricken draft dodgers, you guys are the lowest form of low.
You want it all but wouldn't even go forth to defend it?
Disgrace to my country.

I for one contend that more Canucks fans should be used as front-line infantry.
