2010 NCAA football thread....
Sounds like there could be a major change on the CFB landscape coming soon.
Quote:
Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott emerged from the final day of conference meetings Sunday and announced that university presidents and chancellors have given him all the authority he needs to expand the Pac-10.
"What direction that process takes still could go in different directions, everything from remaining as we are as a Pac-10 that's got some very bright days ahead of it to a bigger conference footprint," Scott said. "I have the authority to take it in different directions, depending on various scenarios and discussions we're going to have."
|
There are reports that the PAC 10 will invite the entire Big 12 Southern division t(except Baylor and would add Colorado instead)to make the PAC 10 the PAC 16!
It would immediately make it the super-conference of the whole NCAA with USC/Texas/Oklahoma all part of the same one. Add in Oregon, Oregon St, OK St., and Texas tech...and it would be the deepest group of teams in the NCAA by a mile.
And if anyone wonders why this may be happening, as with everything NCAA the answer is $$$$.
Quote:
The Pac-10 begins negotiating its new TV agreement at the end of this year and Scott said he needs to know the makeup of his conference before he sits down with TV executives. There are reports that expansion could be worth as much as $20 million per school.

Also it has been reported that the Big 10 has asked both Nebraska and Mizzou to join them which would effectively be the death knell for the Big 12 completely. I guess that would leave the remaining 4 teams to join the Big East...which would be a weak sister on any level.
On top of all that Boise St. is now poised to join the Mountain West Conference that includes TCU, and I would think its almost just a formality at this point as it would bump their credibility as a BCS player considerably.

Pretty interesting stuff, I'm looking forward to seeing how the SEC would react to this if it happens.
Rumors are that they would invite Florida State, Miami, Clemson, and Georgia Tech. Some natural rivalries there with Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, though I've heard they may be after the Texas schools as well.
Pretty much just speculation at this point, of course.

The Boise St. to the Mountain West rumors could happen as early as today. The conference's Board of Directors annual meeting is today and the vote for a Boise St. invite is rumored to be on the agenda. I'm sure there will be leaked reports by the end of the day.

Actually word coming out now is Big 10 is courting Notre Dame and if ND commits ( which they wont) then it will just expand by 1 team....
Big 12 has given a deadline to Mizzou and Nebraska . Of course what is the Big 12 gonna do if they dont answer by the Deadline? Kick them out? I dont think so ...
I would also think if the Big 12 is gone , the SEC would be trying to get at least get Texas and maybe Oklahoma. Texas is the big money daddy and would make the SEC that much stronger.

Except the basketball level. Adding KU to the Big East would make that conference ridiculously strong.
Also, the thing is Texas has its own network coming out. Unless these other conferences are going to let them do their thing they aren't going over to any of them. Texas doesn't need any of the conferences as the bring in way more revenue than any other football program out there. They always have the option to go independent and sign their own TV deal.

As a fan of the Oregon Ducks, I'm not sure what to think of this move.
On one hand it means more money for all of the schools involved, easier recruiting in texas where the ducks are already making headway, a tv network similar to that of the big 10, and the ability to play some of the best college programs (Texas, Ok) while keeping your previous rivalries in tact.
On the other hand, I'm not sure I like the 16 team conference. What the pac 10 had before with 10 teams was pretty cool as every team played each other and a true champion was decided.
As for the Ducks going into next season, things are looking pretty good. Alot of starters are returning and some freshmen have already impressed in spring camp. The group of running backs is incredibly deep with James, Barner, Alston, and Seastrunk all expected to compete for carries.
The one unknown going into next season is at the quarterback position, as Masoli is suspended for the whole year. Know I'll admit I'll miss him running over safeties, but I have confidence in Chip Kelly to turn either Costa or Thomas into a serviceable quarterback as he has a track record of doing so.
The schedule on the year is a pretty tough one. The three that worry me are @Tennessee, @USC, and @OSU. If the ducks can knock of the volunteers (who aren't looking to good right now) and beat one of USC or OSU on the road, I don't think another Rose Bowl is out of the question.

MWC just held a presser stating they will not be expanding right now. Probably a smart move with all of the potential conference shake ups and teams that could be left behind. MWC could probably find both Kansas schools, Colorado and even Nebraska available when this all shakes out.
This is a crazy time for college football. The rumor around here has been Utah and Colorado to the Pac 10 unless Texas opts in to the Pac 10.
If the golden domers go to the Big X+1 then they might stop at expanding to 12 but I doubt it. I think the Big 11 picks up Rutgers, Missouri. They are after viewers and that gets a large
I just don't see Texas going to the Pac 10. Texas likes to control and they have that in the Big 12. So if the conference doesn't lose too many teams it should stay in tact. Nebraska would probably will stay, and even if they lose two teams they could be replaced. TAMU has stated they don't want to deal with Pacific time zone and would prefer the SEC.
Hopefully the conferences don't get too large too quick.

I don't understand why Rutgers gets mentioned in this discussion all the time. They don't bring in viewers, nobody watches them now and tht wouldn't change. There's this illusion out there that Rutgers would bring in the NYC market, but it's simply not true. NYC is a pro sports town, college games are on everywhere every saturday but they're being watched by alumni from schools all over the country. People who don't have an alumni connection here generally aren't college football fans.
If you really want the NYC market bring in NYU and Columbia, ship them a bunch of players and wait two years.

Why would the SEC need to add anyone? They already are the best conference in CFB now. I really hope they don't join the arms race.
I don't want SWAC (school with a circus aka FSU) and SCum (Miami.) in the SEC. We offered them but ole bobby bowden thought it would be easier to win the the ACC.
Now with that said GAtech was in the old SEC and left. I would love to have them back along with Clemson. Get rid of Arkansas and Vandy and bring in GaTech and Clemson.
Texas and OU and this is nothing against those two schools wouldn't join the SEC. UT would want Texas A&M to come with and of course OU. this whole thing is ######ed. Pac10 should just add Utah and BSU and the big11 should get Pitt or ND. Just be done with it.

Outside of Bama and Florida, who exactly is that great in the conference? Vandy? Kentucky? Mississippi State? Ole Miss?

The Vols were bad under Kiffin last year and lost a bunch of players when he bolted to USC.

They didn't lose much. They didn't have a great squad last year anyways. Once Dooley came to town he ran off the thugs.
don't forget LSU is in the SEC...
out of the last 4 national titles come from UA, UF, and LSU.. Not only with UGA pounding on those rainbow warriors a couple of years ago that everyone was clamoring for them to be in a big bowl game...

I can guarantee one thing. If Texas came to the SEC and said take Us and A&M . The Sec wouldnt have to think twice. Texas is one of the big fish in college football in terms of money. I dont think anyone turns them down if they come knocking, at least I wouldnt think so

I wouldn't mind Tejas and OU in the SEC. Get rid of Arkansas and Vandy then. Keep it a 12 team league. Hell just name it the confederate league....

Another thing to think about. If there is 3 or 4 16 team leagues then it will be all but assured a playoff format. No way in the world would a team from the SEC (assuming UT and OU join) would make it unbeaten.

And so it begins apparently....
Quote:
A source close to the Nebraska program told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that athletic director Tom Osborne informed athletic staff members within the past 24 hours that the Cornhuskers were going to make the move to the Big Ten conference.
A source close to the Nebraska Board of Regents told Orangebloods.com the regents met informally Wednesday and have agreed to move to the Big Ten and that a formal announcement Nebraska is leaving will come Friday -- the deadline set by the Big 12 for Nebraska and Missouri to state whether they intend to leave the conference.

Big time coup by the Big 10,if this goes through which isnt guarenteeed yet, as the Huskers are a major program and this boosts that conference a whole bunch.
