Default Canadian at U.S. Border

Audio/youtube link is in the link:
http://www.informationclearinghouse....ticle25495.htm

I've crossed the border (not this crossing though) hundreds if not thousands of times. I've been pulled in a couple times (going both ways), so I know what all to expect. I've been known to get too casual in my responses, but never to the point where I nor the guard felt like we had to get aggressive. I would just have more of a conversation with them instead of giving straight answers.

My thoughts on this: Maybe this guy has crossed quite a few times to, he stated around 5-10 in the last year, but I don't know. He really seemed to be too casual and aggressive in his answering of questions. I don't think he understands what all authority border guards have. They are not cops; they are much higher.
I don't think his threats were really threats, but uncalled for and definitely dumb to do at the time.

What is everyone else's thoughts on this?

Get your friend to ask for the extra slippery lube, that chaffing has got to be murder.

I think this guy was looking for confrontation if he planned to record the conversation...

And now listening to the whole thing, is there any sort of real news story that goes with it? I find it pretty hard to believe that this guy could have a recording device on his person after being brought into two interview rooms and a processing areas without being searched. And there's no way he'd be thrown in a cell with the cell doors "closing" at the end of the video without being searched.

Jar_E, I was just sent this link in an email, so I don't know.
I think the audio was recorded from border agents. Not sure how it was leaked.

The initial officer was a moron but the guy who took over and had the majority of the conversation with the Canadian did a great job and probably went alot further than necessary to explain the situation. The Canadian guy was a from the start running his mouth the way he did and deserved what he got.

How did this thing get resolved? How long would they have been in jail for something like this?

Sounds to me like a lot of typical Torontonians I've met. Arrogant, self righteous, pompous, ass clowns who want to know what I can do for them, not what they can do for you.

I'm sorry to offend anyone by saying this. It's not my intention. Nor am I trying to start any kind of east vs. west kind of argument. I am not claiming everyone from Toronto is this way. It must just be my unfortunate luck that a lot of people I've met from the TO area have this pre-existing disorder. Must be something in the water there.

assuming the recording is real - asking a person who is going to a mall what stores they are going to seems a little anal - but i suppose to some extent the border guy may have been trying to throw the guy off. those border boys have very little sense of humour - so i just try and give straight answers and no chit chat.

the canadian obviously came unravelled like a cheap sweater - i hope he enjoys his next border crossing a little more......

I am always extremely nervous when crossing the border. One time I crossed and had my vehicle searched. In the interrogation they asked why I was passing through the USA on my way to Toronto, and they asked what I was doing in Toronto. I told them I was going their for pride. Later, as I was getting back into my vehicle the guard asked me what I meant by pride. I of course meant gay pride, but I think he thought I was a white supremist or something. I was obsessing about that for days. Everytime I come up to a border now, I always have a little freak out. When I am nervous, I shake... and that is not good when you are trying to come off as someone who has nothing to hide.

Actually, it sounds to me like a lot of typical white men. Full of themselves, selfish, proud, pricks who think everyone else on the planet is there to meet his own needs.

I don't mean to come off as racist. That is totally not my meaning. I am not claiming all white men are like this. I would imagine it is just the white men that I have come across in my life. Maybe it is some defect in their genes.

I have no problems crossing the borders, usually there for no longer then 45 seconds, treat people with respect and most the time you get it back. It is that simple.

I agree with others' sentiments that if the guy recorded his border crossing he likely planned to create a confrontation. Besides, since we can't actually see any video, there may well have been more to how he was behaving than what was audible.

It's sad that you can't be bisexual without being harassed at the border. Stay proud man!

That wasn't Canadian at U.S. Border but rather huge ing idiot at US Border.

He went there with confrontation on his mind and nothing else. I've never had any real issues crossing back and forth and I do so numerous times a year.

Yeah, this is where it all went down hill. It does seem like a stupid question to ask.

Border guards do not need any reason to search you or your car. Most of them make make less than people that work fast food in Canada so it's not uncommon to encounter one that likes to make an example of someone. If you are a jerk like this guy expect to get hassled. You may even get hassled when you are polite. They ask questions, you answer them. They are under no obligation to let anyone enter their country.
