Great video.
The only problem is he should have chosen a city other than some city no one has ever heard of in Brazil to compare LA to.
I would think one reason for Calgary income disparity might be to aid buisnesses in where to start their new buisness. Are you going to put your first apple store in Sunridge or Market Mall? Just an example.

Curitiba is very, very well known in urban planning circles. More of the general public should get to know about it as well. It's a city that's done some pretty cools stuff with transit and land use.

I'm fairly sure that the Herald ran a series profiling Curitiba last year and made comparisons to Calgary. It was interesting for sure.

Mciver and Hughes were just on Q w/ Gomeshi.
They were debating chickens in the backyard. I'm sure if someone wanted to see it, it'll be up on Q's YouTube channel.
Hughes didn't sound like the wingnut that I thought he was. Mciver sounds like he knows he's going to win the election, IMO.

I caught the interview/debate also. Hughes did do a really good job of not coming across like a totally wingnut (something his tweets tend to do).
McIver was good, but Gomeshi had to push him to actually give HIS opinion on the urban chickens. McIver was up to his usual poli-speak that doesn't really say anything. It was all "my bosses this, my bosses that", fair enough when talking about representing your constituents but keep in mind this was only for a pilot project. How can you defend scrubbing a test to decide if it is good for the city or not?
Hughes clearly was the superior on the subject matter, and he flat out shot down McIver's claims that there are plenty of healthy farm fresh eggs around Calgary for us to consume. Now flip the tables and have them debating something more fiscal in nature and I'm sure McIver would come out on top.
I thought he sounded like he was in heaven, a countrywide audience must have had him getting his rocks off. So much better than soundbites and quotes in our local media!

Precisely my thoughts.
My buddy loudly heckled McIver every time he stood up at Flames/Leafs game a couple of years ago. There were other Alderman there with him, but he only picked on McIver.
"Sit down McIver you bum!!!!"
"Hey McIver...You Suck!!"
etc.

Apparently Wayne Stewart will make a "major news announcement" on Tuesday.
Add another to the race.

Nenshi's secondary suite proposal. Thoughts? Reactions?
I like this part.

The Herald had an article on the front page where developers - Jayman in particular has setup a website for what they believe Calgary should be for. I cant remember the link but needless to say it didnt sound like that site was a big promoter of more compact design.

Looks like the Mayor's race finally has something that may peak voter's interest...
nothing like a good money boondoggle to energize the voting public....
Quote:
Still reeling from a scathing audit slamming municipal spending, city council will receive a special report from its top administrator Monday.
City Manager Owen Tobert will bring an “urgent business” item to the scheduled council meeting that aldermen hope will quell concerns that the auditor report, which revealed city contracts swelled by $747 million more than budgeted, won’t be swept under the rug.
Brian Pincott, who chairs the city’s audit committee, said he’s confident that despite suggestions from city auditor Tracy McTaggart that some staffers may have participated in fraud, administrators will have a plan ready to respond to the report he admits has damaged taxpayers’ trust.
“These allegations have shaken the public’s confidence and Calgarians need to know these concerns are being addressed,” he said.
“It’s clear some processes were a little loose and administration has plans to tighten it up and there will be some actual remedies moving forward.”
Questions about how the city signs contracts have swirled since an audit last month revealed some financial agreements ballooned anywhere from 50% to 200% more than originally planned.

Looks like the current mayor and current aldermen were asleep at the wheel. Thats a lot of money that can't be accounted for. Shame shame...
Some people should be fired.

I met Joe Connelly this past weekend and he's a huge tool. Not sure who to vote for but he definitely lost my vote. Looking forward for the elections to pick up steam and I need some time to check out the platforms.

Basically it's suburban developer lobby trying to get their guys elected so that they can continue business as usual and not be forced to change.

Yup.. he would do nothing for this city. And the rest of the city should be pissed at him for the favouritism displayed to his ward also thanks to the mayor living in ward 6.

Yeah. I've had a few brief encounters with him face-to-face as well as reading his platform, interviews, sound bytes, and social media presence (Twitter, etc.). I really have no better or diplomatic way of describing my thoughts other than that he's a complete and unbelievable tool. Small-minded, myopic, ineffective and /or backwards-stepping solutions on almost every single issue.
