Lotto Near Miss
http://telegraphjournal.canadaeast.c...rticle/1080448
Man would I be pissed. I don't even know how to cope if this happened to me. I'd be going through depression for sure. How would you guys deal? Anyone experience any near misses like this?
About six years ago, one of my co-workers matched 3 out of 7 numbers in a Super 7 draw. The other four numbers were one number off. So in the end, it wasn't that close.

I would need some serious therapy if that happened to me.
...I only play Lotto Max when it hits the "max millions" LM and 649 are too expensive. Not that I can't afford the tickets, I just think they're over priced. I've been playing the western for the past couple of months and have won $10 on 5 seperate occasions now.......and it only costs $1 for 2 lines.

My dad use to play all the time about 30-40 years ago. He was in the hospital one week and asked my mom to validate a ticket he had filled out at home on the fridge. She did not, and it was 5 of 6. it was much but it would have been something like tens of thousands of dollars. Back then it would have paid for the house

Last month I went to the store and asked for 5 insta-picks. She gave me 1 insta-pick. I said, no, I wanted *FIVE* insta-picks. So she grabs the ticket back from me, voids it, and prints off a ticket with five sets of numbers. I was agast. I thought it was good that I didn't look at the number of the first one....
I would have much preferred if she just printed me off a second ticket with 4 sets of numbers.

My rule of thumb is if the cashier screws up a ticket I take that one and still get whatever I originally wanted. To avoid this exact scenario.
Also, 52,000 tickets voided in atlantic canada per month? That seems like an oddly large number.

The odds of winning in any lottery are slim but I personally have had a string of good luck with myself and people I know winning the lottery and 50/50 draws........
In the late '90s a family friend in Kelowna won $15 million. They wanted to try to stay humble and keep working at their same jobs but the public got on their case and they retired at Freedom 40. Own a house on Okanagan Lake now, have a house in Palm Desert for the winters, travel lots and really enjoy life. Helped their own parents and kids out as well. Considering everything they are super humble and still great people. Invested well and also have donated a lot to charity. Couldn't have happened to better people minus my own family
A few years ago my office lotto pool won $300K. Our split each was $15k which was nice. Made a big mortgage payment.
My father-in-law won $35K about 2 weeks later. They used the winnings on a nice vacation and to renovate his house which needed some updating.
A buddy of mine that I have Stamps season tickets with won $25K the 50/50 at a Stamps game a few seasons back. The post game party on his tab was fun! Not sure what he did with the rest. I bought my tickets with him so I was that close!

A few years ago my mom got 5 out of 6 on the 6/49 and the last number was one digit off. It was for a large one, too - somewhere in the neighbourhood of ten million. All she got was $2500 or so. Even had she matched the bonus it would have been around a hundred thousand. Oh well, that close.

Are you serious? Was it maybe for an office pool or something?

Just last I was scratching one of those $100 million dollar fortune tickets and matched two "$1,000,000" boxes in a row right of the bat. Then on the last box I was scratching it slowly and saw the letters "mil" and a few zeros... I thought I was going to win for sure, but it ended up being "$100,000" and the "mil" was just the French writing of the number...

Closest "near miss" for me was on Super 7. Got 5 numbers and the bonus; and the other number that wasn't drawn was a 32 instead of a 33.
There is no "5 plus bonus" prize, so I got the "5 number" prize of around $150. If I had that last number it would have been around $200,000.
Another near miss for me was being off by 2 numbers on the 50/50 at the Stamps game.

I've had that same thing happen. My heart was beating out of my chest until I realized it was in french.
Stupid bi-lingual printing on everything.

I don't know.. a few bucks off maybe but not nearly triple! If I wanted a $10 ticket and the cashier printed off $27 worth, there's no way I'd pay $17 more!
52,000 tickets does seem like an oddly high number, unless cashiers in Atlantic Canada are really stupid and keep making mistakes!
Now my question is, why do they void the ticket immediately? I know some places that leave unwanted tickets on the counter and instead of buying one through the machine, you could just buy that one! I'm sure someone wanted to buy $27 in tickets (or thereabouts)

How many people went to that store, ordered $10 in tickets, received $27 instead, got the cashier to void it and got his $10 worth in tickets.
Trust me, if I was that guy, I'd know it was me

Blah could be anyone. Cashier could make this exact mistake many times in a week. 52000 canceled tickets remember.
Don't beat yourself up over it, it just wasn't meant to be!

In Atlantic Canada. Not that one store. I'd be willing to bet there was ONE person in THAT store that ordered $10 and got $27.

Even $17. It's worth $17 to know I didn't void the winning ticket. We're not talking thousands.
The argument in the paper was maybe he didn't have an extra $17. Frankly, if I didn't have an extra $17, I wouldn't have spent the $10 on lotto tickets in the first place.

We have people buy thousands. A few months ago this lady dropped some $3500 on a 6/49 for a year's worth of draws. Usually it's a group play, but still.
52000 voided tickets doesn't sound too far off. We can't keep and re-sell 'mistakes' to other costumers anymore. I end up with 3-4 a day usually because customers don't fill out those stupid slips right.
I've never gotten more than $70. I usually buy for big draws (like over $10mil for 6/49 and over $30mil for Max) but I don't invest tons of $. I think it's due to working for lottery and seeing how much people spend & don't win...
Edit:

As the vendor, Noel would have been entitled to one per cent of the draw, or $300,000.

HOLY $!@# Atlantic Canada retailers get 1% of the winnings?! BCLC is cheap as hell in comparison. We'd get 2 grand, tops.

This is the reason I always still buy the ticket. Even if I'm overcharged $10.00
I know two people within the last year that have won. One of my friends won a scratch ticket for 2 million dollars.
Another family I know won 4.5 Million in the 6/49 in BC
