Portugal barely squeaked into the WC, and this injury to Drogba is huge for Ivory Coast. Pretty much punches Portugal's ticket to the Round of 16.
But who knows, maybe Portugal will now think they have an easy road to the Round of 16 (which they do) but then they will proceed to choke it away?
I'd kind of want to see Portugal make it to the Round of 16 to set up a potential match against Spain.
|
How do I have a chip on my shoulder?? I've said countless times that they were horrible in qualifying and will be in tough against Ivory Coast for that second spot. I have been pretty negative towards them lately. I'm not cocky, I don't think they're gonna make a long run this month. I don't believe they're that good. The friendly they just played vs Cameroon this past Monday was the best they had played in 4 years, but before that, they've been pretty embarassing.
This Drogba injury obviosuly helps Portugal, but that doesn't mean they're automatic to win the first game. Portugal is still in tough IMO.

No, just Locke, his hate for them is ridiculous. I hate England, like I hate the Canucks, but you don't see me spewing crap about them whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Ledley is better than Rio at this point, has been all season
Upson being an injury away from starting is a big worry though
wonder who they put the arm band on now, has to be Gerrard or Rooney I would think

Actually its Gerrard captain, I like that a lot
he plays better with the arm band than without it

Was just going to say this. It sucks for Rio, but King is a much better defender when healthy. I wonder if Capello considers letting King's specialist fly with the team now.

Aw, isn't that sweet, more Spurs love.
King looked very average against Mexico. Maybe he is decent playing every 3rd game against the Wigans and Portsmouths of the EPL, but we all know this is a whole other kettle of fish. Personally, I'd not be surprised if Carragher gets the nod. What are the chances of King being fit by the 12th?

I was thinking more of his performances against the Chelsea's, Arsenals and Man City's of the world in the last month of the season, all Spurs wins
Tevez, Van Persie, Drogba, Adebayor, Anelka
not exactly slouches
I don't get why every time it is even mentioned that a Spurs player is not horrible you have to come in and say its spurs love. They have good players (lots of whom are English) and they had a very good season. King has been in better form than Ferdinand this year, also better than Terry, its not homerish to state that. King played more games than Ferdinand this year as well.
It's not like anyone is saying Jenas and Danny Rose deserve spots on the team, Ledley King has always been considered world class and just held back by his knee which the Spurs trainer (who Fabio enlisted to work with Ledley for England) seems to have come up with a good program for to make him able to play.

I agree that the Drogba injury doesn't completely end their chances of progressing, it just might force them to be more defensive
they are still going to have a solid defensive spine with Eboue, Toure, Toure and Zokora
and with Kalou, Gervinho and Keita they still have some players who can create chances and score themselves
It helps Portugal (and Brazil) no doubt, but its still a very tough group

It's simple diane, I love to grind Spurs fans. It's a hobby of mine. Nothing more. I just like to stir things up. But I'll admit your a difficult one to rile up!
I don't dislike King as a player. I've long thought that neither Terry nor Ferdinand should be assured of their spots. Last season (07-08) Phil Jagielka would have been a lot of people's first choice at CB, including mine. Had bad luck with injuries recently though. Too bad Terry wasn't hound-dogging then.
I do think that it is a risk taking King to SA. The main reason is that it is hard for him to play consecutive matches. If he was suspect, like Barry, but would eventually come around fully-fit and play, then I have no problem. For England's sake, I hope he can play.

Chilean striker and Real Zaragoza striker Humberto "Chupete" Suazo looks like he'll miss the first game or two of the world cup. Fudge, he's their top striker and they need him. He'll be replaced by Esteban Paredes who plays for Colo Colo in Chile.

haha fair enough
Agree on Jagielka, always thought he was better than Lescott and yet Lescott has gotten picked a lot more than him
King's knees are a potential problem yes, but the last few months of the season he played back to backs fine, he even did tuesday/saturdays fine, and on the final week of the season he did saturday, wednesday, sunday fine

I don't know why you care so much. I'm a Spurs fan, and NBC is always spewing nonsense about them. I just know it is what it is, and I don't bother getting riled up about it.

Doesn't every good Chilean player play for Colo Colo?
Colo-Colo has won a combined total of 46 titles, encompassing 4 amateur titles, 39 national tournaments in the professional era and 3 international championships. Since the creation of the Primera División of Chile in 1933, Colo-Colo is the only club to have played in every season never having been relegated.[3] The club has won a record 29 Primera División de Chile championships.[4] The club was ranked among the top 30 football clubs in the IFFHS in 2007 All-Time Club World Ranking.[5]
