you saw it coming the second Ronaldinho took the free kick and Seaman started backpedaling
the departing on penalties is par for the course now though, I prepare myself for a loss starting around the 110th minute because I know where its headed
Looking back its kind of funny that the 06 team was supposedly the golden generation, this year's team is miles better I think
Many are still convinced that that free kick wasn't intended and was in fact a mis-hit. Poor Seaman. England haven't had a top-flight keeper since his retirement.
I think that while the 2006 England WC team was arguably more talented except for the goalkeeper, this squad might just be a better 'team'. Capello's choices have given England options. Bent=Defoe. Heskey is a different player with different attributes. Plus he seems to be a well-liked guy in and around the squad. Terry's indiscretions and Cashley Cole's personal drama aside, they seem to be a tight-knit team - free of the encumbrances of the WAG/Beckham sideshow.
It's kind of weird for me. I'm not a huge fan of penalties and I loath it when England end up in a shootout as it inevitably ends badly. However, Liverpool have done really well in shootouts winning two European cups that way, winning a league cup and an FA Cup. I can only hope after all the misery that England's luck from the spot is going to change.
This video is testament to the fact that they can actually have a successful outcome in them though.

That was fantastic. That Stuart Pearce penalty take was one for the ages. You could see the demons being exorcised on the pitch! Great save by Seaman. He may have been a bit vulnerable with chips and lobs, but he was a tremendous shot stopper. Dodgy togs though. YUK!
Not really, Toni is super slow and super terrible now. Rossi needs to play in Italy if he wants to make the team, playing in Spain doesn't help him. Their strikers are all older though so he will still get his chance in the next few tournaments
I guess im not really that surprised about Toni but Rossi should have been on the team IMO and I think they will regret not choosing him. He was their best player in the Euro Cup in 08. I think it's stupid that just because he plays in Spain, he didn't get chosen. He decided to play nationally for Italy over USA even though he grew up in New Jersey because of his heritage and thus showed his loyalty but this is how he gets repaid. The fact that he doesn't play for an Italian club should not matter.

ya it has been a rough position to fill ever since Seaman retired, I think Joe Hart is a great talent though and that probly starting at the Euro's in 2012 could hold the position for the next decade
The WAG sideshow seems to have been ended by Capello thankfully, I have heard multiple players say they have told their WAG's not to come to South Africa because this is a business trip not a vacation

I think you are mistaken monsieur. Rossi wasn't on the Euro 2008 squad.
I don't follow Italy that much, I've never seen him play.

Why cant they go on and on?
Then it becomes a test of will and fitness.
Id rather the team with the better mental toughness win then bowing out over a duffed penalty.
Soccer is one of the few sports where rest is tough to come by. Of the 11 guys that start, 8 will have to play the whole time.
Its not like Pronger playing 30+ minutes a game, these guys will play the entire 90-120 minutes and have to maintain a mental sharpness while they're at it. Totally different set of circumstances.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

Having games go on and on would result in the most boring event in the history of sport. If a team puts forth an effort their going to burn themselves out and get scored on. You'd wind up with two teams literally standing around trying to save energy followed by a short burst of energy every half hour. We'd wind up with 5 hour+ games.
Not to mention the fact that running around for 120 minutes pushes elite athletes to their absolute extremes and can have significant health concerns. Add on an unlimited amount of time and you're getting into dangerous territory from a health perspective.

I saw some games where they had a GPS on some players. When they came out some of them had run about 10 km?
Great stamina, but there is room in the game for walking/standing around. A lot of the exertion comes in bursts. Like interval training.

Biggest surprise by some was Crouch with 9, most think its a sign he will be starting alongside Rooney in game 1
North Korea’s hopes of taking just two goalkeepers to the World Cup have been dashed by FIFA, with the striker selected instead of a third shot-stopper told he can only play in goal during the tournament.

"The only exception is in the case of a serious injury of a player in the list of 23, who could be replaced up until 24 hours before the first match of the team in the competition.
Think Chairman Kim will break the guy's legs so they can replace him?
