Generally: sandbox games with a bolted on story line usually bore me within an hour or so.
Yeah, I shunned a developer based on one game - but dammit that game was AWFUL.

Why do people use knives to kill tigers? I find the shotguns much more effective. You still need 2 shots but you don't need to let the tiger come so close to you. Is it a requirement in the game to use a knife or am I missing something?

Weaken them with gunshots then chase them down and knife them on horseback. Works on bears too.

Yes it's for the hunter challenges.

Well this is pretty much grand theft auto with horses but the setting really makes the game. Everytime I drive by nose hill I feel like playing this game.

yeah, bears aren't so bad as they are slow. i get all flustered since the cougars approach so fast. makes me too nervous!
though going to tall trees and being around the bears made me start using the r3 button to look behind me all the time. everytime i would slow down to look for a plant, a bear would sneak up behind me and nail me. now i am super paranoid and am always 'checking my 6'

If you lasso a cougar it gets stunned briefly, giving you time to switch to your knife and stab it a few times.

Do the first few ranch missions, they'll get you set up with equipment/info you'll need. Then you can either keep doing story stuff...
OR
Go to a place called thieves landing, play poker, lose, get pissed off, shoot all the other players in a rage and then get pass-out drunk.
I keep choosing option b, which is why am not very far in story mode

The game is pretty random. You don't even have to DO anything. You could be standing still and stuff around you just starts happening.
One time I was just sitting on my horse trying to get my bearings and just enjoying the view, when I guy ran up to me asking for help. I was going to entertain his request, but he was just like "I need a horse senor!", pushed me off my ride and tried to get away. So I shot the guy up, and looted his thieving corpse of cash and ammo. All in a day's work in New Austin

There's a good trick with these kind of events. After somebody steals your horse, you can just whistle, and they'll get bucked off.
Afterwards, I usually hogtie the person and put them on the train tracks.

I'm about 40% done. I made it to Mexico and I like it way better than the "States" side. The little towns are much nicer and more fun to play in. Plus all the different animals you can skin there.
It's funny, I made it to Mexico and haven't completed all the things in the US. I have to get the treasure for Tumbleweed and other odds and ends like that. Fun game!

Stephen Colbert was right, bears are godless killing machines. i'm so godamn jumpy now whenever i roam around Tall Trees, as i've been gang raped by bears a few times now. they're so sneaky, i'm minding my own business picking flowers when RAWR, i'm flat on the ground getting mauled. 10x worse than those friggen cougars
oh and how the hell do you do that last sharpshooter challenge, disarming 6 bad guys in one clip? when i'm facing off against a group of enemies, usually their guns are pointed straight at me so if i try to shoot it, the game registers it as a shot in the chest

Do it in a saloon(thieves landing) and take cover behind the bar and use dead eye to slow it down before they draw out their guns completley. Even though the clip reloads during dead eye it still counts.

I have found some humor in running full tilt in the local saloon and bodychecking hookers.

Is this something you actually believe?
Good game. I'm really enjoying all of the side missions and mini-games, which aren't boring and tedious like GTA.

Is there actually any penalty for dying in the game? I am your typical “reload if you die” weenie, but a couple times now I’ve just continued on after death, and I don’t really see any downside....is there any?

you lose any progress you've made in the challenges and items you acquire between saves, but that's it
