Soooo question. Usually as part of my fitness schedule I get cardio in by either using the stationary bike for 30 minutes, or elipical.

I just found out today, that I have done severe damage to both of my knees, part of it from playing ball hockey on concrete (Sorry guys), part is just cumulative damage over the year.

Its been recommended to me that I apply no strain to my knees for the next 6 weeks, with the possibility of being scheduled to get my knees cleaned up.

Any suggestions for no leg cardio work, and don't suggest swimming, it seems like the pool is never working at my gym.

Where can I find more information on the insanity program - every website I have looked at requires me to buy stuff, and I want to check if it something that I can do or not before I buy

Pretty tough to do cardio when your knees are so bad that you can't ride the bike or the elliptical.

Truth is swimming is the most low-impact exercise out there.

What do you want to know about?

You could just download a couple videos and watch them to see what its about. Buy it if you like it.

Not to sound like I'm looking for sympathy, but I basically can't straighten my knees out or even put much weight on them at all. If I walk, its more of a shuffle.

I did a stupidity number, but since I'm low down on the list of specialists or priorities, its going to be a while before I get in to see what they're going to do.

Can you deadlift?

Deadlift for cardio is pretty good. If you can manage it.

This is a little off topic but, does anybody in this thread do CrossFit? Is there an affordable option in Calgary? Everything I've seen seems to be $150/month or more.

Crossfit is awesome.

But, memberships are usually always that expensive. One in Lethbridge is also about $150/month.

I was afraid that might be the answer.

If this is going to be a long term issue I would suggest investing in a kayak. It's great exercise and requires minimal lower body exertion depending on the type of water you tackle. And it's extremely fun.

May I add to this suggestion? You might want to find yourself a body of water as well. Perhaps a lake or a small pond would suffice.

Jokes aside, a kayak is a great workout but unless you live in a lake community, it is pretty much useless.

So what about a rowing machine?

Been playing some rec league soccer, thanks to plyo and 'legs and back' I'm literally faster than everyone, that's an awesome payoff.

CC, there are machines at the gym that isolate your upper body for a cardio workout. (Its the one where you basically do a "riding the bike" motion with your arms.) It's not ideal, but it would get you some cardio and avoid using your knees.

I found when I was recovering from my ACL surgery that biking was pretty much the greatest thing since sliced bread for ROM and joint lubrication.

Cut off your legs and beat yourself with them for a good cardio workout.

Boxing can be a great cardio workout, although you still might need to use your knees to much for it.

You could also do a lot of other weight related movements for cardio.

Lower the weight, up the intensity.
