As a neutral...

That green slovenian jersey is pretty ugly.

He'll get his first taste going up against Gooch on the 12th. Onyewu hasn't looked solid since he's been back from injury but he still throws people to the ground a couple times a game. It should be interesting.

LOL, Germany, Italy, England use players that only play in their respected leagues.

That Spanish squad looks mighty impressive to me. They really have to be the favourites going in.

After England, I'll certainly be pulling for them the most, for obvious reasons.

Noticed that too. I knew each of those teams always used a lot of players from domestic league, but not ALL.

Spain has all but 3 players playing in their league.

Stat of the day(?)

The last 7 World Cup finals have only featured 5 teams. Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Italy and France. We'll call them the BIG 5.

The last 9 World Cup finals have only featured 6 teams (add Holland).

Will a new team make it to the final? or will is be the usual suspects. Five mentioned above, no matter how bad they seem to be at the moment, are so tough to beat in the knockout stages.

As mentioned, Spain has an incredible team on paper and they are no longer chokers as they beat both Italy and Germany 2 years ago.

You'd think any team wanting to win the World Cup will have to beat at least 2 of the BIG 5. I can't see it happening. Too much pressure.

So it you had to make a bet, and your life depended on it.

Do you take the BIG 5 or the field?

Don't top players usually play in top leagues?

I'm not really sure what people are getting at here.

I don't think the jerseys will be less money, but you'll be supporting a local business.
Things for the tips. I do like supporting local business whenever I can and will be stopping by Kicks/SoccerShop this afternoon to pick up my Chile jersey. Kicks has it for $99 and SS for $130. I don't know why the $30 difference but I will purchase from one today. Thank you! And everyone, buy local!

I have a hard time putting France in the big 5 despite their success at this tournament in the last 3 WC's. I really have never liked their team and this year is no different. I will predict that a new team out of those 5 makes it to the final. Be it England or Spain, I don't know, but I think those two would have to be the favorites to make it to the final outside of those 5 you mentioned.

I'd be surprised if one of the above don't make it all the way. However, they'll have to beat Spain and that is going to be tough for anyone. They're no longer chokers, as mentioned, and are exceptionally good in every position and in reserve.

However, England are going to win it all anyway so it's a moot point regardless.

Interesting. Just browsing through that, what pops out at me were that England, Germany and Italy are the only countries whose national teams are comprised of players that exclusively play in their domestic league.

Spain is another, but they have 3 players that play in England in Fabregas, Torres and Reina.

Every other country has players that play all over the place.

EDIT: Late to the party.

Not just the final but to win it all.

Take the BIG 5 or the field

---

France is one of those teams that I think you have to knock out early. Otherwise, they'll go far.

1958 Semifinal
1982 Semifinal
1986 Semifinal
1998 Champions
2006 Final

I don't believe they have ever been knocked out after the group stage or before the semis in a world cup (if that makes any sense)

If France do end up going far then they can expect an invasion from some extremely angry Irishmen shortly afterwards.

Yes, But when you got the Bundesliga (german league) that is arguably a small step lower than the english league or the Italian league and the whole roster is made up of players just from the domestic leagues it is funny.

If Ballack wasn't hurt Germany would have a player from the premier league.

Funny that the guy that hurt him was born in Germany and played for the german U18 team and brother plays for Germany.

No Luca Toni or Guseppi Rossi for Italy. Surprising.

France don't deserve to be in a so called "big 5", because they lack Zidane who absolutely carried them to the final in 2006 and was also their best player in 1998. He is easily one of the top 5 of all time, I would personally but him at number 1

they don't have anyone like him, and they don't have anyone like Viera

when those two were in their prime playing together it was easily the best midfield in the tournament

Wouldn't put a Germany that is without Ballack and with a transition team in a big 5 either. They will be favorites by 2014 (they have been dominating all of the u21,u19 tournaments etc. for the last few years), maybe even by the Euro's in 2012

I would definitely take a field of Spain, England, Holland, Portugal and the rest over Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Argentina

And I think the Italiens/English/Spanish/German teams are all full of players in their domestic leagues because those are the big 4 leagues in the world. So players don't need to leave the home country to play for a world class club.

Not really, Toni is super slow and super terrible now. Rossi needs to play in Italy if he wants to make the team, playing in Spain doesn't help him. Their strikers are all older though so he will still get his chance in the next few tournaments

so diane and vanflamesfan are taking the field

I'm keeping track

----

They are the big 5 based on track record.
France has 4 semifinals berths in the last 7 world cups (1982-2006).
Germany has 4
Italy 4
Brazil has 3
Argentina has 2 (3 if you go back one more to 1978)

no one else has more than 1.

I'll take the big 5 since Germany is going all the way.
